“It’s pathetic to watch you try to navigate this. You were the only equal to me, you know.”

I heard her, but I couldn’t sniff her out. The voice was clear as day, but it was like the shadows were carrying it to my ears. There was no clear cut direction of where it came from, so I didn’t know which way to walk to find Lupe.

Damn. This was going to be harder than I thought.

“How am I an equal to a lunatic titbag?”

There was a chuckle, and I rolled my eyes, hearing her find my joke amusing. It made me want to punch her in the face more for her even suggesting we were equals. Equal in power, sure. Equal as a decent human being? No.

“I thought you would be the one to see the world like I did.”

Oh great. A villain monologue. Yay to me.

“You’re psychotically naive if you think good people would think like this.”

There was a swing of an arm that passed through me, and I thanked the gods that I was in astral form. There was a flicker of metal through the shadows, and I could have died if I hadn’t been.

Lupe brought a damn sword to a claw fight.

She wasn’t taking any chances at taking me down. It made little sense to kill me, though. Why kill me if she needed my power and magic to break the walls of every wolf out there?

“Of course you are using your magic. Couldn’t stand up to me without it. Typical,” Lupe growled.

I still couldn’t tell where the fuck she was in the shadows. There was no way for me to move to get a clear shot of knowing where she could be or use my magic to override hers. Shadows didn’t work that way.

No... Shadows didn’t brighten with more shadows.

It needed light.

Even with their magical nature, someone could outmaneuver and obliterate the shadows we wielded. The pack house had flood lights. If I could get them turned on, the shadows could be lifted. Maybe not entirely due to Lupe’s power, but enough to give me an edge in the fight.

But I didn’t know which way the house was. Between the wolf jumping through me, which still weirded me out, and Lupe trying to run me through with her sword, I got turned around.

Well, there went that plan.

“Drop the damn shadows, Lupe. If you want to fight me, then fight me! Let’s end this shit so I can live out my days with mates who love and worship me!”

Do you really need to piss her off like that?Silas’s voice made my knees wobble. After coming so close to losing him, the reminder he was still there brought a new level of relief. The bonds may be sound right now and none of them feel like they are in critical health, but to hear him through this thick fog of not knowing if we will make it out alive brought more peace than I thought.

Hey, new guy, don’t question my methods.

Seriously? New guy? I hope you can feel my eyes roll from here.

I gave a smirk and moved on.I needed something to calm my ass, and sassing my mates was the best way to do that. I have no regrets.

Surprisingly, the shadows rescinded, and I slowly saw Lupe’s form come into view. There were four other wolves with her, two on either side. The smile on her face was something out of my nightmares. She cackled as she patted two of the wolves on their heads.

“Let’s see how much you learned at school.”

The four wolves lowered their heads and snarled. She intended for me to fight all four of them. I let out a sigh as I accepted my fate. If I had to fight four pissed off wolves under the control of a lunatic, then I guess that was how this would go down.

And I wouldn’t go down easily.

They came at me in a full sprint, and I held my astral form so I could formulate a plan. If I dropped the magic, I could at least land every punch without having to use much energy. It also opened me up to getting my ass handed to me.

But that wasn’t an option, anyway.

Four large wolves collided with the enemy wolves; one black, one dark red and gray, one mixed with grays, another gray one. Coffee and whiskey, citrus and woodsy, sweet and spicy... all the scents wrapped around me, and I knew I was fine. My wolf let out a joyful yip as our mates and another wolf tore into the enemy.
