But I was a Shadowborn.

And it was about time Silas saw my power in real action.

I pulled on my astral form and felt the magic wash over me. Silas sunk through my body just as I sucked enough air into my lungs to move away. I kept the form as I backed up so he could get a look at me. If only we had completed the bond. Then I could talk to him right now.

But the dark red and gray wolf snarled at me. Even now, he couldn't fight through the fog to recognize me. But I couldn't lose hope. My mate was still in there. I could feel it.

The pain of what transpired between us was gone. If I had to fight for this bond, then I would. Until Silas gave me a reason to give up, I would keep fighting. This wasn't him. I knew it would never be him without Lupe's influence.

This wasn't the man that defied his father to come here to beg for my forgiveness.

This wasn't the man that let me fight my frustration out on him.

This wasn't the man who told me I could hate him in the morning so he could help me through my first heat.

I yipped at him and took off again. I heard his snarl behind me, but that didn't stop me. This was going to happen whether or not I liked it. We were going to fight this one out, so I could get my mate back. If that meant taking a few punches, then so be it.

It didn't take long, and I had Silas on my ass behind me. He snapped his jaws a few times to take my tail, but it didn't work in my astral form. His anger at my escape prevented him from realizing he couldn’t catch me. This was the reason Shadowborns could win in a fight, so that's what I had to use to my advantage. I could see the lights from the castle coming into view, and I reached out to my bond to make sure the wall was still in place. Thankfully, it was. Jackson and Hunter didn't need to know what I had planned. They would come to the rescue too soon, and this needed to work out at just the right time.

I would get through to my mate one way or another.

And when I crossed the quad and ran to the back where the mats were, I pulled on the magic to let the shift come. It came on fast, and I had to roll onto my feet so I wouldn't trip and make a fool of myself. Silas lunged, still in his wolf form, but I was ableto dodge in time. There was a swell of magic after he landed on his feet and turned to face me.

"So much for being a Luna. You ran from your opponent."

"If you think that kind of taunting will get to me, you are mistaken. It was all part of my plan."

He scoffed. "Some plan. You had me chasing you through the woods and then came to the one place you know I will beat you."

This made me laugh. The arrogance I had come to know was there again. This is how he acted the first time we met. He felt invincible, untouchable, a god among men. Silas almost lost to Hunter not even an hour ago. Did he think he was unbeatable just because he plunged a knife into his chest?

Thinking about my mate sent a pang of pain in my chest again. I really wish I could let the wall down to find out if Hunter was okay. The death of a mate filled the bonds with nothing but despair. Every mate bonded to me would have felt it, so Jackson would have. Jackson would have lost it if Hunter died.

That's at least what I had to keep telling myself.

If I survived this, I would march straight to the infirmary, throw myself at Hunter, and beg him to forgive me for running after he got stabbed. I should have been next to him right now, but I couldn't let Lupe take Silas from me.

"You're cute. It took little to make you land on your ass the one time we fought. I didn't try too hard the last time because I thought we were holding back."

"Yeah, you would think that."

I narrowed my eyes at him. "What are you talking about?"

"Of course you would think I would hold back. Ever since I came to this school, you thought I would hold back just to win you back! I’ve had to kiss your ass and practically kiss your mates' asses since I got here!"

I cocked an eyebrow at him and crossed my arms over my chest. "Did you think I would accept you back with open arms? Yourejectedme, Silas. You took my soul and tore it in half!"

Yeah, I was stalling. If I got him angry enough, he would make a mistake, and I could knock him out.

"Then you did the same damn thing!" I could feel the hatred in his words. The spit spewing out of his mouth made him look rabid.

He ran at me, and I jumped out of the way just in time. Silas spun and kicked me in the back, sending me forward. I recovered in time and dropped to my legs and swung my leg around when I heard him step closer.

Silas went down with a snarl. I thought it would be advantageous to jump on top of him, but it wasn’t. He was ready for the attack and swung a right hook into my temple. When it connected, I went down to the ground again.

Holy shit. This dude can pack a punch.

It was like the fight between him and Hunter all over again. We became an entanglement of limbs as we tried to get the upper hand.
