"Understatement," Dylan retorted.
"I didn't plan that. Lupe told me yesterday there was a change of plans for my mentorship. Considering it was me joining your class, I thought Lupe would have told you about it. My mistake in trusting her."
Dylan rolled her eyes as Hunter and Jackson chuckled. It was cute seeing Dylan roll her eyes. She parted her lips when she did it like it surprised her someone could say something sostupid. Opinionated didn't quite cover how to describe my mate. Though, I kind of loved seeing her so feisty.
"Don't trust her, Sy. You won't even live long enough to regret it," Jackson told me.
It felt great hearing my Beta call me by my nickname. I thought that privilege died when things fell apart between us. I thought it was a good thing he found a mate within a different pack who had others already. It meant he would transfer to another pack and we could work on things through diplomacy between the packs. That's at least what my plan was until he had been rejected and sent here. Now we share a mate instead.
Wow. The Great Moon has a twisted sense of humor. First she makes my mate a Shadowborn. Then it turns out she’s fated to someone I hurt. Then, to top it all off, she was mated to the person I hired to kill her.
"Learned that the hard way. I don't plan to make that mistake again."
Dylan cackled, sending a chill down my spine. "Really? Why?"
My lips twitched downward at her questioning. "Because she didn't tell you I would be in your class today. She clearly can't be trusted to tell you someone who you hate will attend your mentorship with her. It’s almost like she doesn't like the idea of being alone with you."
"She knows I will kill her if I am alone with her."
"Probably."
"That it?" she challenged.
“No. While in her office after you left, she told me some things about you. It was almost like she wanted me to think the way I did when I rejected you.”
Dylan exchanged a look with the others. I'm sure they can talk telepathically, and I wasn't privy to the conversation. That was fine. I'll earn that someday.
"Why are you here?" Dylan asked me.
"You rejected me."
"No. Why are you sitting here talking to us?"
It was my turn to roll my eyes, but I forced myself not to. "I will not keep things from you, Dylan. Lupe talked about you like you were a threat. At least, that's how it felt to me. I didn't like it, so I thought I'd tell you. If she considers you a threat, then she needs to be on a watch list. I may not have your trust, but that won't stop me from having your back."
Her eyes went wide with my admission. I wasn't sure why this shocked her. I'd do anything for my mate, including kill a top-ranking member of an academy.
Jackson nudged Dylan, and she looked at him. He gave her a look, and she growled at him. Yet again, I may not be part of the conversation as it happened in their minds, but I wished that could me just then. I'd give anything to hear her voice inside my head. The thought of connecting with her that way had my dick getting hard. In this get up, she would clearly see that, and I didn't need these two poking fun at me right now.
My wolf wanted me to touch Dylan. Any way to bring her close and for him to feel her touch. He paced inside my mind with her so close by. The yearning to complete the bond, throw her over my shoulder, and take her to levels of ecstasy only I could bring her was almost overwhelming. Yeah, I'm sure the other two have their own methods, but each mate should bring a female a different balance to her. I know what I brought to the table. I just needed a chance to show her.
"Give him a chance, Dylan. Maybe spend an evening or something with him before curfew to get to know him and work on things. The Great Moon gave him to you for a reason."
She growled at him as I looked at Jackson with widened eyes, and my mouth fell open. Did he just stand up for me?
"You don't get to dictate how I go about this relationship with him," Dylan snapped.
I winced at her tone. Jackson may think I deserved a few hours to work on things, but that didn't mean Dylan thought the same way.
Hunter cleared his throat. "No offense to you, Silas, but you hired me to kill your mate. I stand by Dylan in whatever she chooses, but I'm not sure if I want you alone with her so soon."
My head bowed down from the guilt that rolled through me at his comment. He wasn't lying. I did that, so it shouldn't bother me, but it did.
When I looked back at Dylan, there was a look of pain in her eyes. I wasn't sure if it was about what Hunter said or the fact I was still standing in front of her. I took that as my cue to leave. Without thinking about it, I bowed my head at her with a slight tilt to bear my neck to her–a sign of respect to someone who was more dominant, which Dylan now was with her mates’ power flowing through her, but also just respect. I heard her gasp when she noticed, but I didn't look at her. I continued on into the dorm without looking back.
I'll win her over. I just need to figure out how I can do that.
