‘You,’ he signaled a bodyguard ‘get her bags inside.’
‘Are you leaving?’ I asked. I thought he said he would still help us.
‘Yeah. I called Ferris last night on a secure line and explained everything I got from Cam. He knows what to do.’
‘I guess this is-.’
‘Take care, Mouse.’ And he drove off, leaving a trail of dust behind him to fall upon all the memories we shared.
If only it was that easy...
‘Ferris, Brax,’ I nodded as entering the room. I was the winner today, it was my game from now on.
The two seemed surprised by my new boost of confidence, especially since I was returning without an important link of the chain.
‘Cole filled us in on what you got. Good job,’ Ferris was first to congratulate me. Firstandlast, because no one else followed.
‘Let’s hear it. I have a meeting with one of the leaders in less than an hour. Apparently, some of their funds ran out.’ Brax seemed unsatisfied with the Annelids spending even more than the Elite.
‘Ok. So we need someone on the inside to search and see if any of those videos actually exist.’ I spoke, preparing myself for the plan. ‘And since he has a passion for young women I was thinking about entering the house through the main door. I’m going to pose as his escort for the night.’
Both of the guys blazed back at me with undecided gazes, then turned to look at one another, just to burst into laughter.
‘You don’t think I can do it?’ I asked, convinced that my physique would help me out a little. I mean, it got me them...
‘Iknowyouwon’t do it!’ Brax barked, in a cutting reply.
I was enraged ‘Why?’
‘Because it’s not safe,’ he continued ‘we’ll get someone else to go in.’
‘And risk having another person involved? Think about it. It’s the perfect solution. All we need to find is an agency that supplies girls for him. Well, that and one more thing. We need Ferris’s help. Cole said that maybe you could handle the safe or the computer.’
‘Maybe,’ Ferris put a hand under his chin. ‘But I don’t like you personally going there.’
‘We have to act quick. There’s no knowing for how long we can hold back the rebellion or the governor from putting his plan into action. We don’t have time to convince someone new to join us. Especially someone who could seduce him and someone we can trust not to betray us.’
‘It’s a no,’ Brax decided, speaking so determinedly that he didn’t leave too much room for anyone else.
‘Why? What is it to you?’ Maybe the Cole aftershock was still raging in my veins, making my blood boil and my mouth say stupid things.
‘You know what. You’re right.’ Brax said. But in reality, I was the one who indirectly put the words into his mouth.
At least I got him to agree even if the cost was higher than I expected. I tried to extract either a daylight confession out of him, or an agreement.
I guess it paid off in one way. Just not the one that I’d hoped for. ‘I’ll make a few calls and see where he finds his girls. He has to have a source. It’s not like he can put an ad in the paper. Someone on the streets must know.’ Brax was already formulating a plan to cover up the fact that something inside him wanted to try and stop me.
‘That means I should also get to work,’ Ferris let out a sigh.
‘Are you ok going in there? I know it’s been a while,’ Brax asked him, but I had no idea what they were talking about.
‘Yeah. I think I’ll be ok.’
‘Do you want me to come with you?’ Brax insisted.
‘No. I should be good. Now, if you’ll excuse me. I’m going to try and talk to some people I know, and upgrade some of the software I have.’
‘Do you think we can pull this off?’ I asked Ferris.
