Slumped against the counter, completely sated, I pant, “Yes. Very, very much.”

“Good. Because I’m going to worship you like this forever.”

 Chapter 22

 Ren

Careful not to tip the cake too far this way or that, I keep my hands steady and place one cautious foot in front of the other as I carry Maisie’s masterpiece along the cobbled path down toward Kraken Cove.

Maisie eyes my tail pushing against the center of the carrier, her salacious thoughts written all over her face.

“You better tuck those thoughts away or everyone’s going to smell them on you,” I suggest a little smugly.

Maisie rolls her eyes playfully. “Pft. Like they won’t be able to tell what you did to me minutes ago. I’m sure I smell as blissed-out as I feel. It might help if Ihad my panties back.”

The corner of my mouth tugs into a grin. “Those soaked things? Can’t imagine they’d be comfortable for you. It’s better for me to hang on to them.” I don’t add that I didn’t wash my face so any creature who has a slightly heightened sense of smell would be able to scent Maisie on me. My inner beast is feeling a little territorial and this is the most subtle way I could appease him.

“Ren,” Maisie whines in the cutest way, stretching my name over three syllables.

 “Yes, my angel?”

She stares up at me with the most adorable pout. “Can we maybe just drop the cake off and head home and get to the celebratory part of the evening? Because if you keep smirking at me like that I’m going to be dripping down to my feet before long.”

My chest puffs up and I feel about twenty feet tall. “You mean the fucking part?”

 “Uhm, yes.”

I quirk my head at her. “You want my cock that badly?”

 “Obviously.”

Giving her a quick once-over, I nod. “Good. Because I want you even more. But we’ll have to wait. I really want you to enjoy tonight and drink in all the praise you’re going to receive. Maybe there are potential customers for you once they see and taste your cake. I wouldn’t want you to miss out on that opportunity.”

Eyes soft and brows furrowed, Maisie asks, “You don’t mind waiting?”

“I’d wait forever and a day for you.” It’s the gods-honest truth. I’ve found my one. The sunshine to my shadow. And waiting another day, a month, a year, it doesn’t matter to me as long as I can keep her.

“I—” Maisie’s eyes widen as the rest of the sentence breaks off.

I think I know what she wants to say because those three words are pounding through my soul with every beat of my heart, waiting to be set free at the right moment.

Our eyes meet and hold, saying the words that need to wait just a little bit longer.

Across the ocean, the sun dips toward the horizon, the sky transforming into a trove of pastel pinks and blues, speckled with wispy clouds rimmed in gold.

As the dull thud of music reaches us, I realize that I’ve been so caught up with talking to Maisie that my anxiety has not made its usual debilitating appearance yet. Normally I’d be on my second or third list by now if I were to face a crowd of this size.

Needing to give Maisie a heads-up in case it does decide to suddenly show up, I explain, “So, uhm, you know I’m not good with crowds, usually. Always,” I quickly amend. “So if you’re off talking to friends and you can’t find me, I’ll probably be taking a moment for myself in a quiet area away from everyone. I promise I won’t leave the beach without saying anything to you first.”

“What is the most practical way for me to help you?” she asks simply.

“I’ll be okay. I want you to have fun and not worry about me. All your friends will be here and—”

Maisie pivots and faces me directly, determination set in her eyes. “I don’t think you understand where I’m at, Ren. As far as I’m concerned, you’re mine. And I take care of what’s mine. If you need anything, you ask me. And if it’s in the realm of something I can give you, I promise I will.”

“Yeah?” I ask, hating how weak my voice sounds compared to the confidence I felt mere minutes ago.

Maisie cups my jaw and pushes onto her toes to peck my cheek. “Yeah. Now let’s try it again. What do you need?” she asks gently.
