We walk toward the front door and Marisol closes up behind us. Outside, I take a deep breath of the fresh ocean air. The night is still, the stars above twinkling with enough light to see all the way to Kraken Cove and beyond, where they dissolve into tiny fractured diamonds dancing across the calm midnight surface.

“Starry Hill,” I whisper.

Marisol places her arm around my shoulder and echoes, “Starry Hill.”

We stay like that for a couple of moments, enjoying the peaceful quiet of the night, before I ask, “See you next week?”

“Yes. I’ll come for lunch at The Flowering Teapot on Wednesday. I want to hear all about your meeting with Doc Calla. I’m so excited for you, my friend. This feels like such a huge opportunity.”

I turn to her and grab her hands. “It does, doesn’t it?”

Nodding furiously, she agrees, “Totally. The future’s looking bright.”

“Talking about bright, I’ve got some ideas for a Halloween party. I know it’s still a long way off, but wouldn’t it be fun to get the whole town involved?”

Marisol’s enthusiasm matches mine. “Yes! That would be amazing. Write down all your ideas before you forget them, and I’ll workshop some too. We can share at lunch next week.” I like that Marisol knows how busy my brain is and that I need to write down my ideas before they float away.

We hug and say goodbye. Then, I’m prancing home with a full heart.

Chapter 14

Ren

My tail lashes behind me as I stare up at Starry Hill’s darkened shops, nerves slowly coiling deep in my gut as I wait for Maisie.

Earlier, Bodin had carried a giggling Tilly from The Singing Seahorse, a cloud of sexual energy enveloping them as they made their way past the rock I was hiding behind.

Not long after, Beryl and Calixta had emerged from an alley on Second Street, a similar level of arousal pinging between them before they disappeared in the opposite direction.

If this had been a few weeks ago, I would’ve been overwhelmed by the sheer level of desirebrushing against my senses. But since my picnic with Maisie, I’ve been full, sated, and the arousal I sensed tonight was merely like a touch of awareness I can shrug off.

I’ve never felt as good as I do now. My body is energized and strong, my mind sharp and clear. I’ve hardly needed any sleep. And it’s all because of one beautiful human who has gifted me her pleasure and fulfilled what my species requires to thrive.

Just when I’m about to get up and go in search of her, the sound of Maisie’s happy humming pierces through my thoughts, her familiar voice like a sweet balm to my nerves.

My heart leaps with anticipation and my feet are propelled forward at the thought of seeing her. I pick a spot in the middle of the path where the bright stars can illuminate me clearly, and track Maisie as she saunters down the hill.

The moonlight catches on the halo of tiny white flowers woven into her hair, reminding me of the first time I saw her and the way the sun favored her then too.

Angel.

That’s what Maisie is. An angel who has freed me from my shackles and given me a new lease on life.

The moment Maisie sees me, she breaks into a brilliant grin that ignites my very soul. She runs the last few steps toward me and I stalk forward to meet her, unwilling to wait another second.

“Ren!” she croons happily and flings herself into my waiting arms. I instinctively pull her close to me, dipping my head to breathe in her scent.

I can’t remember the last time I’ve been hugged like this, but I know this moment will be imprinted on my memory for the rest of my life.

“Hi,” I say quietly against her ear, drawing one hand up to rest at the nape of her neck.

Maisie’s body shudders and the misty edges of her desire filter into me, my cock twitching in response.

She tilts her head back to meet my eyes. “Hi.” The word is husky, heavy.

A pleasant heat rolls through me, my own arousal rising quickly to the surface. But unlike previous times with Maisie, I’m in control of my body.

My thumb whispers in a gentle arc against the soft skin on the back of her neck. “Did you have a good night?”
