Sophia heard him stir behind her and she imagined he must be changing positions to get more comfortable. But after a moment, she felt the strong arms of Thomas wrap around her.

It was the most comforting thing in all the world to have him close. Sophia wondered how she had ever gotten by without the sensation of him being wrapped around her.

“You cannot sleep?” he asked.

“I have no desire to,” she answered.

“Why not?” Thomas asked in concern.

“Because if I sleep then I shall miss this. I never believed I could be this happy. Why would I want to sleep through it?” she asked.

Thomas pressed his nose into the back of her head, as if he couldn’t get close enough to her hair.

“I suppose you are right. You must forgive me for having failed and slept,” he laughed.

“You didn’t fail. You rested. And I cannot blame you for that. We did use rather a lot of energy,” she chuckled sheepishly in reply.

“I’m glad you understand,” he sighed with delight.

“But I shouldn’t like to get any rest just now. I should like to remain awake and alert. When I look at the stars, I think about the fact that they cover the whole of the earth. There are so many of them. And yet we can look upon just one and see that it is the brightest and the most exquisite. I think our love is much like that. We see the brightest and most beautiful and we choose it. We have to. Without it, there is nothing for us,” she said.

“Well then, you are my brightest star,” Thomas decided.

“And you are mine,” Sophia replied.

“And I think that we shall spend our lives enjoying the star that has come before us. You shall spend yours looking at me and I shall spend mine looking at you. And in the end, all we shall have is one another,” Thomas added.

“I rather like that idea,” Sophia said.

They stood quietly for a few moments, just enjoying the night sky. Sophia saw a star shoot across the sky and she pointed as quickly as she could, but Thomas missed it.

“I shan’t miss it the next time,” he promised.

Sophia turned to face him, wrapping her arms around Thomas with warmth and affection.

“If you do, I shall miss it with you,” she declared.

For a few moments, their eyes locked with one another, and they put their foreheads together in a sweet union.

“How foolish we were in our youth,” Sophia declared.

“Perhaps we simply had to be apart in order to learn how deeply we loved one another,” Thomas said.

She agreed, thinking how they really had learned that lesson.

“I cannot imagine that any problem shall come between us from now on,” Thomas said.

“Never? How can you think that?” Sophia asked. As much as Sophia hoped that they would never again face the obstacles they had thus far, she wanted to be realistic. There would always be days when things did not come together for them. There would always be times when they might disagree or struggle to come together in the best of ways.

“Because we have already overcome our own stupidity. Tell me, my dear, what is more dangerous than a man’s own ignorance?” Thomas asked.

Sophia knew that he was right. They had proven that time and time again. Their stubborn behaviours had produced much idiocy in their engagements with one another over the years.

No matter how much they might disagree in the future, they could work through it. No matter what issues they faced, they could overcome them. It was foolish of her to ever think that life could stop them, when in reality they were the ones that would determine their own behaviour.

And she would make every effort to be better than ever before, to show him that she could be the woman that she had always tried to be, and often failed. Because now, Thomas was Sophia’s support. Now, she had his strength in addition to her own.

“I promise that I shall always be open with you,” she said.
