Thomas scoffed. “Of course I would. Why would you assume that I would not? What has given you that impression?”

“The fact that it is so clear that you still love her. The fact that as we are returning to London, she is the thing that is most pressing on your mind. And, of course, the fact that you have just learned that she is not married or engaged in any way,” he listed.

“Well, you needn’t be obnoxious about it,” Thomas replied dryly.

“I just think that you ought to consider moving on. And I have the perfect idea for you. I know of just the right thing to help you get your mind off this woman who has trapped you for so long, and for you to be let go into freedom and a new love,” he said.

Thomas really did not care for the idea of finding a new love. He wanted to dive into the business when he returned to London. After all, that was more important than seeking a wife when he did not yet have to marry. Did it not make more sense for him to work and become financially stable as his father was, before seeking a match?

“I cannot fathom what your idea might be, but I am fairly sure that I shall not care for it all that much,” Thomas laughed.

“At first, you likely will not. But listen to me. I know of a matchmaker in London. Miss Wainsville or something, I shall have to find the exact name. Not only did two of my cousins use her services, but I have heard that she has never once failed in her task. Everyone she matches ends up happily married,” he explained.

Thomas laughed, thinking the whole idea to be ridiculous.

“A matchmaker?” he mocked.

“Say what you will about it, but her record has been successful in every match. I believe that you wish to be married and that it is time for you to do so. You must forget this Lady Sophia,” he said.

Thomas knew that he could never forget her. No woman could ever compare.

“Just try it. Forget your heartbreak. Try to move on. You never know what might happen,” Officer Kingsley said.

Over that night and the following day, the words echoed in Thomas’s mind. By the time he reached his home, he knew that he was tired of being haunted by his past.

He would agree to try the Matchmaker. He would put his fate in her hands.

Chapter 6

Sophia giggled with delight that they were finally arriving in London. She could hardly believe that all of the excitement had come to this.

She was still greatly intimidated by the thought of meeting with the Matchmaker and allowing a woman who did not know her to find her a husband, but alas, it had appeared to be her only option.

Adrianna was equally delighted. It seemed as though the two of them were going to have a splendid time.

Knowing that they would be staying with Adrianna’s aunt and uncle, Sophia was even more thankful for this time away from her home. She would have a newfound sense of freedom among the elite of society. After all, London was the most fashionable city in the world.

It would be quite thrilling to stay in the home of Adrianna’s aunt and uncle, the Lord and Lady Faversham. Not only were they well known members of society, but she had heard that they were undeniably charming people.

However, none of this had done anything to improve Sophia’s mood. She still felt a great deal of sadness and heartache. Her reluctance had not shifted.

No matter how much she desired to return to her old self, to be joyful and passionate, she could not help but feel the strain and sadness of a woman abandoned. She could not shake the humiliation of having lost the one to whom she had been betrothed.

She could not escape the stench of disloyalty.

“You look so dour. Can you not smile for just a moment?” Adrianna prodded her.

“Forgive me. I am distracted,” Sophia replied.

“Of course you are. But you can at least attempt to appear joyful, can you not?” she challenged.

“It is rather difficult to appear joyful when one is feeling the way that I am,” she complained.

“Stop with your moodiness. You agreed to do this. You agreed that it was a wise decision and that you could truly make a decent match. Please do not turn back now and change your mind when we are so close to London,” Adrianna begged.

Sophia nodded, knowing that her friend was right. She had made this decision.

“I shall not refrain, however, from telling you that your melancholy does make you appear even lovelier. A woman as beautiful as you are shall be easier than most to pair up for the Matchmaker. Do you think you can look sad again?” Adrianna teased.
