When Sawyer turns and walks to the other side of the basement, leaving my path to the steps open.

I dart toward freedom.

Chapter 47

Cali

Miles moves at the same time.

I reach the bottom step before his huge hand clamps over my wrist.

I scream. Miles yanks me back toward him, and I whip my hands up and claw at his eyes.

“Jesus.” He snatches me up, pulling me into his chest.

“Let me go!” I scream. My arms are pinned against his chest. I kick my knee up to hit him between his legs. He drops us both down on the couch, moving so he’s lying on top of me.

“Easy, Cali. I’m not going to hurt you.”

“Get the fuck off me!” I claw at whatever skin I can get.

Miles buries his head in my neck. “No.”

My chest heaves for breath. He has me pinned, and I can hardly move. His coconut scent fills my nose, mixed with something else.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” I ask. “What is going on?”

Miles doesn’t answer me, and it makes my heart beat faster.

Sawyer comes back, and from what I can see, he’s dragging a wooden X-shaped cross. A St. Andrew’s cross.

I freeze.

Sawyer drags it to right in front of the TV.

“No,” I whisper.

Miles says into my ear, “A hundred points. Right here, right now.”

I swallow.

Sawyer pants. “Good lord, that’s heavy.” He looks across the room. “Is that why you wouldn’t get it?”

There’s no response.

Sawyer moves over to us, an eyebrow lifted. “Runandfight? Did you want me to be right that bad, bunny?”

I growl at him.

Sawyer turns to Miles. “Think you can get it on her, Miley? You seem to be struggling as it is.”

I jerk my head to try and see what it is he’s talking about.

“I can do it.”

Sawyer drops a piece of fabric. Miles pushes off me a little.

“Miles! What are you doing?” I try to turn away, and he lets me. I scramble onto my stomach before he sits heavily on me. He leans down, “Have you ever messed with sensory deprivation?”
