He grunts. “I’m not waiting three months.”
“Me either.”
“He’s not going to tell us where she is.”
I crack my eyes open to check around the room. Ryder isn’t here.
“That doesn’t matter.”
“What do you mean?” Miles turns to me.
“She has a tracker on her.”
I hear Miles sigh. “Dude. He took her collar.”
“I know.”
I crack my eyes open to look at him. He’s stiff. “Don’t fuck with me. Are you for real?”
“Yes.”
Miles jumps to his feet, then glances at the front of the plane and sits back down. “Where?” he hisses.
“In her arm. I had one put into the birth control I gave her.” I’ve never been more grateful to be thorough.
Miles looks at me for a minute, then claps me roughly on the back. “Oh my god! Genius! Have I told you I love you recently?”
I wince. “No need to hit me.” But I can’t keep the slight smile off my face.
Miles sits back, his face flushed. “Oh my god. We can get her back.”
We’re silent for a bit. It’s not just a want. Ineedher back. She started as revenge, but the longer she stayed with us, the more I knew she was different. And the more I learned about her, the more I needed her. I need to unpeel all her layers. I still do. Examine every secret. Make her understand, once and for all, that she’s mine. Ours.
Miles’ soft voice startles me. “Do you really think she ran?”
I clench my jaw. I’ve been running that possibility around in my head. I don’t want to believe it, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility.
Miles is silent. “I hope she didn’t.”
I grit my teeth. “She’ll pay if she did.”
We are silent for a bit. Then, Miles says, “We didn’t exactly make it easy on her.”
I snap my head to look at him. Miles gives me a torn look. “We didn't make her at home.”
“What are you talking about?” Anger rolls through me.
“She had nothing. She had no clothes, for Christ’s sake. Nothing personal.”
“I prefer her naked anyway,” I mutter.
“Sawyer,” Miles snaps. “Did we give her a room? A bed? A goddamn toothbrush? What about deodorant and shampoo? Did we even ask her what she likes to eat?”
My gut cramps. Shit. We didn’t do any of that.
“I brought her cat.”
“A few days ago! That should have happened at the very beginning.”
