“Like…is Sawyer a Dom?”

“He’s a switch,” I say.

She’s silent for a minute. “And you’re a sub?”

I chuckle. “I’m a switch, baby. I mostly sub to the men, though.”

“Why?”

I grab a clump of her hair and braid it. Why? I don’t know. I like it that way. It calms the chaos in my mind when I can’t just…let go.

I clear my throat, “I’ve always been that way. Why do you like to submit?”

She stiffens. “I don’t.”

I grab another clump of hair. “Cali, I’m talking about in the bedroom, not your mind. But we can talk about that too if you want.”

“I’d rather not,” she says.

I play with her hair in silence. The movie plays in front of us.

“Is Ryder also a switch?” she asks.

The thought of his bossy, controlling ass submitting to one of us makes me laugh. “No, babe, he’s all top.”

“So if Sawyer’s a switch, why didn’t he…after he came…you know.”

“Return the favor?”

She shifts.

I braid three pieces together, focusing on the different shades of blonde in her hair. “Sawyer doesn't give head.”

“Why?”

I stiffen. “That’s not my story to tell, shadow.”

I expect her to keep pushing, but she just nods and keeps watching the movie. Bright colors flash, and images move across the screen, but I don’t pay any attention. As I run my fingersthrough her hair, my body relaxes. She does too. Her head bobs forward a few times.

“Miles?” Cali asks softly.

“Yeah?”

“What’s going to happen to me?”

I clench my jaw. The only scenario I can think of where she stays safe is if she’s with me. Close by me, as my shadow. It’s the safest thing for her at this point.

That, and I don’t want to let her go. She’s so feisty and strong and intriguing. Every time she’s in the room, I gravitate towards her. I just want to touch her. Feel her. Make her feel good. She makes me feel happy, and I’m not sure why.

But I can’t tell her that. Not now. I can’t even talk to her about trying to keep her safe…it’s not the right time. I know she’ll just fight me on it. She’s too scared to see reason.

“Miles?”

I sigh. “Let’s not talk about it right now.”

Her body stiffens.

“Please, Cali. We can talk later. It’s late, let’s get some sleep.”
