“Strap in, bunny. I have a stop to make.”
“Wait, no.” Panic runs through me. “We’re going as far and as fast as we can.”
“Well, yes.” He winks at me. “We’ll runandmake a little pit stop.”
I cross my arms. This is all so weird. What is his ulterior motive? “How do I know you’re not just taking me right to them?”
“I’m not. You have my word.” Sawyer looks me in the eyes. He looks sincere, as far as I can tell. I’m not convinced the man is ever genuinely sincere.
We pull out of the dirt driveway and head south. I soak in the landscape, memorizing the location. We’re truly out in the middle of nowhere.
“What are the rules?” I ask.
“You’ll get fifty points to play the game. And another fifty if we don’t get caught. You’ll lose it all if you break the only two rules.”
I glance at Sawyer. I thought he was huge until I saw Ryder. That man is a giant. Sawyer looks so relaxed, with one hand on the wheel and one resting loosely on the center console.
“How many points to let me go?”
“A thousand. Should Ryder decide you’re allowed to stay.”
My stomach twists again. “You sick fuck.” I look outside again. This game would get me a tenth of the way there. If I live past it. “How do I get him to decide to keep me?”
Sawyer’s voice gets serious. “I don’t know, bunny.”
We drive in silence for a bit. I want to cry again.
No. I’m done with this. I’ll win their stupid little game. Twenty miles is a huge radius. How will they find us without Sawyer cheating?
“Where’s your phone?” I ask.
“In my pocket.”
“Give it to me.”
“Do you think I’m stupid?” Sawyer looks at me, his eyes twinkling.
“They’re probably tracking you with it. And you can tell them where we’re at.”
“I promise I won’t. I’ll get fucked just as hard as you will, and I’m sore.”
I narrow my eyes at him. “I don’t think you’ll care that much.”
Sawyer chuckles, then fishes in his pocket and takes his phone out. He powers it off in front of me. “Good?”
I cross my arms. No, not good. But better.
I watch him drive. He looks so different than when he forced me on his friend’s dick, branded me, and said he was going to kill me. Right now, he looks calm. Thatlookisn’t in his eyes.
“You’re crazy as fuck, aren’t you?” I ask.
Sawyer throws his head back and laughs. Almost as quickly, he sobers and looks at me. For a moment, he looks the most normal I’ve ever seen him. His voice comes out soft, “Am I crazy, Cali? Or am I just playing a game?” He maintains eye contact while driving 50 down the road.
I clench my jaw. “Look where we’re going.”
Sawyer winks, then looks back at the road.
I clench my jaw. “Where are we stopping?”
