“What?” I can’t help the shock from bleeding into my voice. “Did you make sure she wasn’t going to say anything?”
“I don’t know about all that.” He starts walking towards the kitchen. “I planned on tracking her down and shooting her.”
My stomach bottoms out. I can’t say anything for a second. “What?”
“She’s my mark. Although,” he reaches the island and grabs an apple out of the fruit bowl, “I suppose…if you caught her and…I don’t know, kept her away from me, I’d think about negotiating.”
“What the hell?”
Sawyer takes a bite of the apple, drawing my gaze to his stubble and sharp jawline.
“If it’s not worth it to you, I’ll go. I’m gonna use my Glock this time. The rifle is boring.” He looks at me with full seriousness in his gaze.
But he can’t be serious…right?
I throw my hands in the air. “You want me to keep her away from you? How?”
“It’s a game.” Sawyer rolls his eyes and tosses the apple in the air. “God, you’re boring.” He catches it with his huge hand and eyes me. I know he’s waiting for me to ask him more.
“A game?” I grit.
“You’ll be her safe zone. Like tag. If she gets away from you, though, she’s all mine.”
I pause, trying to figure out if he’s serious about this. “Where did you let her go?”
“Out the front door.”
“What?” I glance out the window. I see nothing but our front yard and endless pastures. I must have just missed her on my way in.
“Jesus.” Sawyer rubs an ear with the hand not holding the apple. “No need to yell. I’m right here.”
I dart to grab the keys. “So she knows what the place looks like and how to get here?”
“Not important if she’s dead,” Sawyer mutters.
“How long has she been gone?”
“I don’t know. Ten minutes?” he says around a mouthful.
“You cocksucker.”
“Nope, still not me,” he mutters as I rush to my bedroom to grab a shirt. As I run through the kitchen again, he throws something at me. “Oh, take this.”
It’s a Ghostface mask.
“What the fuck is this?”
“She doesn’t know you’re here. She hasn’t seen my face. Thought you wanted to protect the family?” He raises an eyebrow and smirks.
I nearly crack the plastic in my grip. “You’re gonna pay for this.”
“Sure thing, Miley.” He yawns. “Oh, and better hurry.” He winks. “I told her to run as fast as she could.”
Chapter 10
Cali
As soon as I see the open land, I bolt. I keep waiting for a bullet to hit me in the back — there’s no way he’s just going to let me go. I run as fast and as far as I can until my lungs burn and my spit tastes like blood. I haven’t run in forever, and it’s hot as ever living fuck. The sun is beating down on me. Heaving for breath, I push my legs as fast as they can go, and I feel like throwing up.
