My heart fills with hope.
“In three months.”
“Three months?” I sputter.
“Yes,” he barks. “I need to know you’re over whatever honeymoon stage is messing with your heads. And I don’t want you to ruin her life because you couldn’t get it figured out.”
Three months? Three fucking months? Fucking hell, she could be anywhere in that time!
Sawyer nudges my hand and growls, “Fine. We’ll do it.”
I whirl on him, disbelief running through me. “The fuck we will! I’ll give him thirty minutes. Max.”
Sawyer shoots me a dark glare and taps my foot again with his. He’s trying to tell me something.
The rage wrestles in my chest.
“Unlock me.” Sawyer turns back to Ryder.
Ryder doesn’t move. “You give me your word you’ll get on that plane?”
“Yes!” Sawyer snaps. “We’ll get on the fucking plane. Get these fucking cuffs off me.”
Ryder looks between us. “And you?”
I grit my teeth. Fuck. I don’t know why Sawyer is agreeing to this, but I have to trust him. He’s as messed up as I am over this girl. “Yes,” I growl.
“Good.” Ryder bends down and unlocks Sawyer, giving him a hand up. “We don’t have much time. If there’s anything sentimental here, grab it. I’m burning the place down, and then we’re gone.”
Chapter 86
Sawyer
The small plane takes us a few hours to the coast. We stopped a few times for fuel, and then we hit a private airport with a bigger, but still private, plane. The same one we used to take back when we hunted with Wyatt.
I puke a few times on the flight. Every mile between Cali and us rips at my heart. I’ve never felt more tortured.
She’s getting away. I swore I’d never let her go, and now she really has a chance to run. To forget about us. And that breaks me into pieces.
I hate that I don’t have the strength to fight Ryder right now. How could I let this happen?
Miles is unusually quiet the whole time. Ryder talks about his plans, but neither Miles nor I say anything.
As we’re boarding, my resolve almost crumbles. I can’t leave the country knowing she’s here. I turn to leap off the stairs, but Ryder is behind me and grabs my arm, pushing me roughly into the plane.
I whirl on him, and darkness closes in around my vision.
I’m gripped roughly. “Sit down. You’re going to hurt yourself.” Ryder backs me to a seat, and when my knees hit it, they crumble. The plane is roomy, and it’s just us, but Miles sits next to me.
I’m useless right now. The thought damn near makes me want to cry. I can’t do anything to get Cali back. I grip the collar I gave her. I haven’t let it go since we left the house.
The plane takes off, and the sadness gripping my chest slowly fades out, replaced by anger.
If she really ran, I’m going to beat her ass black and blue, then brand the rest of our initials into her. Because clearly, she didn’t get the message the first time.
Ryder paces up and down the aisles, occasionally disappearing into the back and the front. When Ryder disappears into the cockpit for the 20th time, Miles leans over into me. “So what’s the plan?”
I lean back and close my eyes. “We’re gonna get our girl back.”
