The sky above us is bright blue, and somewhere, a bird chirps.

“Cali.” Miles shifts.

“Right.” I move to get up. “Sorry.”

“No.” He grips me, hugging me to him. “Stay. I mean, if you want to. I just had something to say.”

I glance at him. I don’t like the change of tone.

“I…don’t be mad. I kind of lied to you about something.”

I sit up and move off him. Dread boils in my stomach.

“Wait.” Miles sits up, holding my hand. “You know when I said…when you asked about Weiner?”

“Yes…” Where is he going with this? I glance around for my shorts.

He bites his lip. “It wasn’t me who brought him here.” He takes a breath. “It was Sawyer.”

Chapter 78

Sawyer

Ryder dragged me out shopping with him. I didn’t want to go. In fact, I’d rather stick pencils in my eyes, but here I am, glaring at the women’s clothing aisle.

I can’t get Cali out of my head. I’ve never been this messed up over a woman before.

Did I kidnap her when she hadn’t done anything? Could it really have been chance? But no! The cop said someone at the gas station called. She called 911 that night. I saw her in her car talking on the phone.

My thoughts run in the same circles they have been all night. The clerk. It could have been the clerk.

Fuck! I slide aggressively through the rack of clothes, looking for her size. These clothes are trash. Nothing I’d like to dress her in, but there aren’t a lot of options in this town. I snatch things off the rack, angrily stacking them on my arm.

It doesn’t matter how I got her. I have her now. She’s wormed her way into every part of my life, and I’m never letting her go. She can fight me all she wants, but it won’t work.

Ryder’s phone rings. He digs it out of his pocket with the hand not holding the cat food and steps back to take the call. I snatch a few more things.

Ryder comes back, looking tense.

I stiffen. “Everything good?” What if something happened back home? Did she run?

“Yep.” Ryder flashes a fake smile.

I glare at him.

“She’s fine, Sawyer,” he snaps.

That part looked truthful.

“Fine. Let’s go.” I walk the clothes to the counter. Being away from them makes me twitchy. I don’t like it one bit. I’ll only be content when she’s within my reach.

Is she okay? Has Miles gotten her to drink more water? Fuck, I’m going to do that when I get back.

Chapter 79

Ryder

That phone call changes everything. I didn’t want it to happen, but I knew it could.
