He chuckles. “You’re a lot more obvious than you think you are.”
“And you?"
“What about me?"
“You’re in love with her, too.”
“Love is a strong word.”
“Is it the right word?” I step closer to him.
He doesn’t answer.
I want to yell at him, shake him by the shoulders. Iknowhow he feels about her. I know he wouldn’t bring her books, wouldn’t cuddle with her on the couch if he didn’t feel something for her.
I’ve never seen Liam so twisted up about any woman, not even when we were in high school.
But he won’t admit it. And honestly, I can’t blame him.
It doesn’t matter, does it?
Isla’s gone. And even if we find her, nothing will ever be the same.
Chapter Thirty-Five
DARE
I stand in the small, shitty room she’s rented with the cash in my wallet, looking at the peeling wallpaper with anger making my stomach roll.
The moment I saw her being assaulted by some arsehole, I’d lost it. And I couldn’t seem to get myself back together.
I’m furious at her for leaving like this, for putting herself in danger, for betraying us.
And what’s worse is she won’t tell mewhy.Just says she needs all of us here, and what can that mean other than that she’s chosen one of them?
I take a ragged breath.
She still hasn’t come out of the bathroom, and in the back of my head, I’m worried that I hurt her. I know how big I am, and I didn’t wait to prep her.
I’m ready to go knock on the door and check on her like the absolute fool I am when my phone buzzes to life in my pocket.
Liam.
Fuck.
I grit my teeth and answer the phone, planning not to tell them a single word about finding Isla.
“Did you find her?” I step out onto the creaky balcony, bracing myself on the chipped painted wood of the railing.
“No.” Liam’s usual bark is just a sad sigh, and he sounds so defeated.
I squeeze my eyes shut, pinching the bridge of my nose.
“We've looked everywhere within a ten-mile radius. If she was ever here, she’s gone now.”
Goddamnit. He doesn’t sound angry. He doesn’t sound like Liam at all.
I draw in a heavy breath and blurt it out.
