“Sorry, girl. Lady V is controlling me right now, and she is determined.” She rattles off her address as Mackenzie climbs into the passenger seat.
She has to practically hop into the truck, and I fight the smirk pulling at my lips.
“Laugh it up, chuckles. Just take me home so I can be done with this night and you.”
“Yep,” I say simply, pulling onto the street.
We get to Jena’s place first. She opens the door, Dom’s hand in hers. “I’m taking this one with me. You be nice to my friend, Tarzan, especially since you’ll be seeing each other more.”
Mackenzie rolls her eyes.
“Consider our debt even now. Have fun, brother,” I call as Dom shuts the door.
I glance at Mackenzie. “Wanna tell me where I’m taking you?”
“I’m sure you remember how to get there.” Her voice is low, almost like she doesn’t want me to hear it.
She’s living back at her mom’s? That’s not what I expected. Last I heard, she was working for some fancy hotel chain a few towns over.
“You know I don’t plan on staying here permanently, but I also don’t want you inserting yourself into my life while I’m here either.”
“You expect me to stand there while you get groped, knowing you were uncomfortable?” My grip tightens on the wheel. The image of that asshole’s hand on her thigh makes my stomach knot.
“I expect you to act like you don’t care about me, just like you did when you dumped me and I left town.” She keeps her gaze fixed out the window.
“Can’t do that. I’m not a liar.” I glance over, watching for any flicker of reaction, but she doesn’t move.
“Please. You broke up with me, Logan. You’re the one who didn’t care and didn’t want me anymore. You threw meaway like a piece of trash. Just drop the damn act.” Her voice shakes, and the sound of it cuts deeper than I want to admit.
I pull up in front of her house. She reaches for the door handle, but I catch her other hand.
When she looks at me, her watery eyes gut me. Before I can think better of it, I’m pulling her toward me, kissing her, breathing her in. For a moment, it’s like nothing has changed. Then she pushes me away, her eyes clouded with confusion.
All I can see is the flush on her cheeks, the way her lips look even fuller now.
I need to get a grip. There are reasons we aren’t together, and I cannot forget them.
“Sometimes we do shit because we have to, not because we want to.” My voice is rough. She stares at me like she’s trying to figure out what that means before stepping out of the truck.
She pauses at her front door, looking back once before disappearing inside.
As I pull away, the thought loops in my head, relentless.
That was a big mistake.
