Eric is itching to the get the Black vote and what better way than to… “Cameron is an amazing man, Eric.” I smile and let the thought fade away.

“He couldn’t make it tonight but he sends his regards.” Eric replies. He closes the distance between us and I feel suffocated. “There is someone I want you to speak with in a few minutes if you’re able to.”

“Okay…” I’m not following Eric. I remembered Cameron mentioned there was a contact at the fundraiser he wanted me to meet. “The contact?”

“Yes.” Eric’s voice is flat. “In fact, he’s around the corner in the private office. He’s waiting for you.”

I look into Eric’s eyes and the smile is gone. This quickly went from being something helpful to now I’m an accessory to everything. I take the cue and nod. “Okay.”

“He likes coffee.” Eric steps back. “Have a great meeting.” The smile reappears on his face and he goes back to Politician Eric. He rejoins the fundraiser and doesn’t miss a beat.

I stare at Eric for a long while as he mingles with potential donors, and other political dignitaries. A few celebrities arrive and they want to do photo-ops with Eric and Heather. Everyone is laughing and having a good time, and yet, I have to meet my fate just a few feet away.

I pour a cup of coffee and put it on a saucer. I walk carefully to the corner office and take a deep breath before I turn the knob and enter inside. I stand in the far corner and close the door behind me. All I see is the man’s back but I already know who it is.

“Good evening,” Senator Jacob “Jay” Edwards greets me with a beautiful smile. I can already feel the Big Dick Energy from him and he wields it like a swordsman. “Please, come in. Sit down.”

I walk further into the room and sit down in a leather chair. Senator Edwards takes the cup of coffee and sits across from me. I’m already intimidated by him and I’ve barely been in the room five seconds.

He has dark brown hair with silver highlights and a light silver beard. He looks very distinguished and I can see why he has such a fan club. His light eyes sparkle and smile at me, but I can also recognize he’s not to be played with.

He’s classically handsome and he knows it. The Beautiful Asshole is what everyone calls him and he lives up to that name. His comments regarding race(“How are blocking freeways and burning down buildings protesting police brutality?”), LGBTQ (“Why do these X-men want to become Transformers?”), and everyone who isn’t a rich, White male(“I just don’t understand homeless White people. You’ve had a 400-year start.”) suggest he’s a proud member of the good ol’ boys.

He briefly ran for president but dropped out not because he wasn’t losing but rather, he didn’t want to give up the power he currently had. It was suggested he would’ve won by a landslide and the conspiracy theorists online and offline ran wild.

Former CIA and decorated military veteran, Jay Edwards is about as American apple pie as one can get. Yet, there’s a cunning deadly charm about him. It’s been heavily rumored he was behind numerous suspicious deaths but no one knows for sure or if it was just urban folk tale.

I most certainly don’t want to find out for certain. “Good evening, senator.”

I don’t like how he wanted us to meet alone and I’m unnerved at the thought whatever happens between us, no one would take my word over his. He could strangle me and people would somehow blame me for it.

The senator sips his coffee and smiles. He closes his eyes and shakes his head. “Your father always had the best coffee. No matter where I’ve been to, I knew his coffee would always just hit the spot. My wife likes the sweetened stuff but I just love plain and black. You get more of the flavor from the coffee that way. Sugar and cream often dilute the flavor.”

I know Senator Edwards doesn’t want to talk to me about coffee so I just keep my mouth shut. I have no idea what the hell is going on and I don’t want to be involved in any underhanded shit. I know too much already.

“Your father was an innocent man. He was a patriotic man. He loved this country. He protested against the racial injustice but he still looked into the heart of everyone. He could always tell the real from the fake.” Senator Edwards circles the cup with an index finger. “That was something I admired about him. A lot of people admired about him.”

“Mm hmm.” I’m not sure where he’s going with this.

“Your father didn’t deal with any bangers, dealers, any of the sort. That’s why his shop was neutral territory. Everyone knew – and still knows – it wasn’t to be messed with. It was sacred ground. When the sacred ground doesn’t become sacred anymore, that’s when people have problems.” He lets out a small sigh and rubs his beard. “That’s when I come in.”

I shake my head. “I’m not following you, Senator Edwards.”

“Oh, please.” He smiles again. “Call me Jay.” He takes another sip and adjusts his tie. “Let me continue. I’m one of Cameron’s and Eric’s silent business partners. We supply drugs and escorts to many members of Congress. Republican, Democrat, Far-Left, Far-Right. Even the so-called Independents get in on the action. In exchange, we get things passed like policy and bills, committees formed, and everyone is happy.

“If people don’t play fair, and well, no more Oxy and pussy for them. Normally, that’s when bills get stalled, there’s some mudslinging back and forth in the press, and everyone is unhappy. Well, everyone who is not getting what they want that’s more precious that millions of voters getting financial relief.” He flashes another smile and it’s just as bright as the last one. He’s a Sadist.

“I don’t understand,” I’m surprised but I shouldn’t be, “what does that have to do with me and my coffee shop?”

“The opposition Cameron is facing is starting to get rather ruthless and ugly in her game. I’m helping with protection.” Jay takes another sip of coffee. “I don’t know why she’s acting the way she is but I do know she’s on a suicide mission. It’s only a matter of time before you become her prime target.”

The hair on my arm stands up and my body shudders. I’m a dead woman walking and everyone knows it. “If she comes after me like you say she will, no one will stop her until it’s too late.”

“Au contraire, Ms. Hicks. A bullet stops everyone.” He grins and the smile travels to his eyes. “She’ll come close to you, but she won’t get you.”

“Why are you telling me this?” I ask. It seems everyone wants me involved but not too much. “I’m already in too deep. I’m not supposed to know any of this.”

“You’re not, but you need to know so you won’t be surprised, even though you will be.” Jay is being intentionally vague and I think that’s something all powerful people love to do. “Cameron is going to prepare you as much as he can but it’ll be up to you if you want to go through with it.”
