“It’s my day off,” he grumbled.

“You forfeited that by canoodling with your ex in public.”

“It’s not what it looks like,” Adam replied. “Jen is staying with me. She’s going through some shit. She couldn’t work the gate and got upset.”

This appeared to take the wind out of Javier’s sails somewhat.

“Would she corroborate this?” Howard asked.

“You sound like the prosecution.”

“The god damned fans are the prosecution. It’s bad enough we have protestors at every game. You being a serial love rat will not help.”

Adam shook his head. “I’ve never cheated on Jen in my life. How dare you?”

“That’s not how the public will see it.”

“I don’t give a shit,” Adam snarled. “Javier. There is no story.”

“Are you sure?”

“Not about me and Jen getting back together. No.”

He glanced nervously at Steven then Javier. He’d told them what Jonas meant to him. As if he would jump into Jen’s arms at the first opportunity. Even with a huge reason sleeping peacefully upstairs.

“I’d better prepare a statement then,” Howard said.

“Thank you, Howard.”

Adam heard the office door go, leaving him with Javier and Steven on the call.

“Your personal life is getting out of control,” Javier said. “Have you spoken to Jonas?”

“He won’t answer my calls.”

Javier ran his hand through his hair. “Fucking hell, Adam. We have training tomorrow. I will not have drama.”

“I’ll sort it,” Adam said. “I promise.”

“You’d better.”

The call went dead. Adam sank down on the sofa and put his head in his hands. How the fuck had life become so complicated?

The door slowly opened. Jen had her jacket on and Olive in her arms.

“No,” he said, springing to his feet. “Please don’t take her.”

Jen’s eyes were red. “I can’t deal with all this. I need to get my head straight.”

“Where are you going to go?”

“I’ll tell you when I get there.”

“It’s just one stupid article,” he said.

He was fully aware that he was begging at this point. He didn’t care. The idea of being apart from Olive was unbearable.

“No it isn’t,” Jen replied. “TheMailhave done a piece comparing my current look with when we were out on the town. I can’t take being picked apart like this.”
