“So,” I began, unsure of how to broach the subject. “We have a lot of stuff we need to tell you.”

“Oh.” He sounded almost afraid, as if he’d just begun to lower his walls and believe everything was good in his world and I was about to ruin it.

I decided to hurry and just put it all out there. “We’re all reborn legends of old and need our soulmatch to unlock our powers, which was why the leaders shunned us, hoping we would never find one another and get our magic. The four of us have gotten our magic and since then the leaders have kept sending mages down here to kill us, telling them lies about us having magic because we stole it from mages. You have a soulmatch that will be sent to another world than this one, in the hope that you won’t be able to find him and get your powers. We need to practice how to make portals so we can get to him.” I was out of breath once every last word had left my lips.

“Sure,” Altair answered after a few seconds. “I knew that burger was way past its expiration date,” he muttered and started pinching himself.

I groaned. “Xari, please help me.”

Xari coughed and then spoke to Altair without removing his eyes from the road. “It is true, Altair. Silver can show you some of his magic and his familiar. I am bonded to Niam and Silver is bonded to Wilston.”

Altair still looked like we were some kind of hallucination, but I powered through. Taking a cup from our kitchen, I held it out so Altair could see and filled it with water.

 “Okay,” he said, looking unconvinced.

I sighed. “Shamus, you can be visible.” He appeared beside me in an instant, his tongue out as he panted for breath. He’d remained invisible since we returned to the RV after grabbing Altair, although I had no idea where he’d been hiding since I wasn’t able to see him. Snowflake was here somewhere, too, them being the only two familiars allowed inside.

“Okay, I can sort of believe you now,” Altair admitted, petting Shamus with a growing smile on his face. “So, this means I get magic, too?”

“Yes,” I grinned. “We just need to get to your soulmatch.”

“And he’ll be in another world?” he asked.

“Yes, and we haven’t made portals before so we need to practice those before we can get to him.”

 “But is his world safe?”

I shrugged, not wanting to lie to him. “We know it’s another world close to ours, so like this one, but other than that, we knownothing. But we’ll be practicing as much as possible when we reach our destination.”

“I’m glad. I hate thinking about my match being somewhere unsafe. What does soulmatch even mean, exactly, like do you love one another romantically or is it more like a platonic bonding to get your powers?”

“We love each other romantically; I believe it would be impossible for us not to. I knew Wilston was mine right away; never had I ever seen a guy that handsome before,” I admitted with a dreamy sigh. I had no problem gushing about my man.

“Oh,” he looked down at his lap, almost saddened by this. I decided not to pry, it wasn’t really my place and he’d been through a lot the last couple of days. Me asking him such personal questions wouldn’t be fair to him.

“How long?” I asked Xari, wanting to get to our next location as soon as possible.

“Only three hours left,” he replied, sounding both excited and exhausted.

Thank God. I was so over driving.

“Who is Julie to you guys?” Altair asked, looking in the direction of the bunks.

“Oh, she’s Xari’s best friend from before he found us. He’s been here the longest.”

“But isn’t it dangerous for her to be driving around with you? You mentioned mages were sent to kill you.”

 He had a point.

“She was being threatened in her coffeeshop, so we figured she’d be safer with us. Besides, we all love her now. I’m totally contemplating stealing her away with us when we walk through the portal,” I admitted with a smile.

“Like I was going to let you leave without me,” Julie said from the bunkers. That little eavesdropper.

“Glad we’re in agreement!” I yelled back, pleased she was coming with us.

“You’ll come with?” Xari asked, still not removing his eyes from the road.

I could almost hear her eye roll from her bed. “You would all die without my awesome company!”
