It was too good to be true. A man like Silver being mine. But he sounded so sure about it. Like it was a matter of fact to him. He’d pretty much claimed me as his. God, I wanted to be his.

Deciding I was done hiding, I opened the door and got out as gracefully as possible. They stopped talking when they spotted me. Xarius and Niam gave me awkward smiles and Silver, well, Silver gave me a smile I’d like to make my own.

And then I was suddenly hit with a blast of wind, throwing me off my feet and against a tree just beside the teardrop trailer. Hard.

“Fuck!” The three of them yelled out in unison, and then all hell broke loose. Thirty mages came out of hiding and attacked us, or attacked the others. I was probably presumed dead, or at least I assumed so, since they didn’t spare me any mind as they attackedthe others. Snowflake and Leon were amazing to watch, they were ferocious beasts, attacking fast and hard.

A scream to the left tore my attention away from the familiars to what Niam was doing. He held out both hands and poured out boiling water, cooking the mages in front of him alive. I shouldn’t have underestimated their powers, but I sadly had. This? These were the fucking coolest powers ever. I had never seen magic used like they used theirs. They’d told me everything they could do, and yeah, I should’ve realized just how badass they were, but damn.

Xarius buried at least ten of them alive underground while he strangled the others, removing all air in their lungs, just like he’d told me he’d done before. It was amazing to watch. But then I remembered.

Silver!

I darted my eyes around, trying to find where he’d gone. He was hiding by a tree, silently making his way over to me. My heart warmed. He’d been worried about me? And here I was staring at the magic battle instead of thinking about his safety. Was I truly good enough to be his soulmatch?

“It’s done!” Xarius called out, alerting both me and Silver that the danger was over. “Silver, Wilston, you both good?”

“Yes!” we both yelled. Silver brushed off his jeans and ran the rest of the way over to where I was still sitting on the ground, the tree a comforting presence behind me.

“Are you unharmed?” Silver asked, then winced. “Yeah, I should’ve asked if you’re okay. You have to be harmed after that hit.” He kneeled beside me, looking over my body. I felt hot as he examined me so closely. His face was right there, all I had to do was tilt my head and then his lips would meet mine.

Just then, a nose hit my face. I wasn’t kidding. A fucking nose. Leon came into view, looking like a fucking mad bird, with his wide unblinking eyes and tilted face. My face must’ve showed my horror, because Silver was laughing his ass off.

“You should’ve seen your face!” he wheezed, holding his stomach, rolling on his back on the ground next to me. I would’ve been mad had his laugh not lightened up my entire being.

Xari and Niam came over to us, looking both exhausted and alive, and by alive, I meant vibrating with power. Like they loved the thrill of it. I was actually jealous. It seemed amazing being able tocontrol that much power. I was dying to get my own magic unlocked, but I wouldn’t rush things with Silver, more than satisfied with letting him run the show that was our relationship. Not that we really had one yet, but he'd claimed me in front of the others. He just didn’t know thatIknew that part.

Silver groaned at them. “I know that look.” Niam blushed and Xarius looked even prouder somehow. I shot Silver a questioning look and he pointed to Xarius and Niam. “Those two get all worked up every time they fight off mages and as soon as the battle zone is dealt with and we’re safe, they fuck forfuckinghours. Why do you think I got the good earplugs? Otherwise, I would never get any fucking sleep around them!”

If it was possible, Xarius preened even more after being called out yet again on their sex life. Poor Niam looked beet red, but seeing as it hadn’t stopped them from having loud sex before, I took it that Niam didn’t care enough about being embarrassed.

“Now that we know you’re both okay, maybe we should get a move on before they find us again?” Xarius said, looking around as if trying to sense if anyone was hiding.

“Speaking of,” Silver began. “How did they find us in the first place? You keep your wards recharged so they shouldn’t have been able to find us.”

“What?” both Niam and Xarius said at the same time.

Silver’s eyes got impossibly big. “You haven’t recharged the wards?!”

They shook their heads in perfect synchronicity, it was impressive actually.

Silver grabbed the bridge of his nose and muttered under his breath, “If you spent less time fucking and more time practicing, maybe we wouldn’t have had that fucking problem! I swear if I find the tiniest scratch on Wilston’s body I’m taking my anger out on you two.” I shivered. Did that mean he would look me over? God, I hoped so. I was starving for this man’s attention, it was almost embarrassing, but since I was the only one in the know, I decided not to give a shit if I was obsessed or not.

Well… unless Xarius could pick up on obsession, too? Was that even a feeling or emotion?

Niam nodded like he totally understood Silver’s threat. “How, um, do we recharge them?” he asked, sounding awfully guilty.

“You do the same as when you make them, just put power into an already made ward, strengthening it until it’s like a brand-new ward. You need to do it daily, just in case,” Silver explained. It was amazing how much he knew about magic. I was never taught properly, and since I had no magic myself, I’d found it boring and rather painful to study. It’d seemed like a waste of time and an emotional drain back then.

Xarius and Niam began creating the wards around the van and trailer, then cleaned up the rest of the battle zone. Silver offered me a hand and I took it, grateful to have some help getting up. I winced once I was back on my legs.

“Fuck,” I heard Xarius whimper. Then he gestured for Niam to do something to me and once Niam’s eyes landed on me, the pain disappeared. Xarius breathed out in relief. “Now, don’t kill us, Silver, but damn, your back got a rough hit, Wilston.”

I just nodded, grateful to be rid of the pain, even though I knew I wasn’t healed. But at least I didn’t have to worry about it hurting.

“I can keep the pain away until we fall asleep, as soon as that happens my powers will turn off. But it’s easy for me to carry on myday and still keep you pain free,” Niam explained. “I’ve been, um, practicing.”

“How the hell have you been practicing dealing with pain for days? Have you guys been hurt without telling me?” Silver questioned.
