Softening, she stepped closer to him and draped her arms around his shoulders. “Forgive me, my Blood. Of course you’ve mapped, color-coded, and documented them for the past thousand years, haven’t you?”

“Hardly.”

She nipped playfully at his ear. “Are you sure about that?”

Chucking, he opened a plain manila folder with a flat map of the world. Only two red dots marred the surface. One in England, and the other…

“The only other ally she had for many years was you, my queen.”

She closed her eyes, her breath sighing out. “Once she had me under her control, nothing else mattered.”

I didn’t know what to say. The thought of our queen having to serve Elaine Shalott for hundreds of years made my blood boil in my veins. I couldn’t imagine how horrible it’d been for Gwen.

Knowing that we existed. That we fought to stay alive for her.

But if she tried to call us to her…

Elaine waited like a foul spider to pick us off one by one until she managed to snag her true quarry.

“So.” That single word shimmered in the air, casting ripples of power through the room, drawing our gazes to our queen’s shining eyes. She straightened, and the weight of her presence filled the room. Tendrils of her power seeped into me.

Deep in a primordial forest, a giant stag with massive sweeping antlers raised his regal head. Alert. Ready.

“We have a plan, thanks to Mordred’s diligence. At midnight, we’ll use the heart tree to travel to Newgrange, and then we’ll find out if the legends are true.”

“At midnight, my queen?” Lance asked slowly, his manner carefully respectful—but also unsure why we didn’t travel immediately to at least see if Mordred’s theory was right.

Her gaze settled on me, tracing the complicated patterns of ink in my chest. Goddess help me. The glancing attention of my queen’s gaze was enough to bring me to my knees.

“I want to free Merlin as soon as possible, of course. But a few more hours shouldn’t change the outcome, and I’d like to ensure it’s dark when we arrive and leave. He’s been imprisoned for hundreds of years already. Waiting a few hours gives me time to ensure we’re ready.”

Now it was Lance’s turn to stiffen with an affronted wrinkle across his brow. “We’re ready now. We but await your direction.”

She glided closer to me. Sweat beaded on my upper lip. My fangs throbbed. I fought to keep them sheathed, not betraying my hunger. I couldn’t hide my response in the bond, but I would at least not stand here drooling with my fangs out.

Or perhaps I would. Her index finger traced the words “my queen” inked over my heart.

“I’mnot ready yet. I must be at full power before this battle.”

I dropped to my knees and turned my head to bare my throat. “Take me, my queen. My blood is yours.”

She bent down toward me, but only lightly kissed the frantic thumping of my pulse in my neck. “I will, my Blood. But only while my alpha slakes your desire in my bed.”

Goddess help me. My queen’s words undid me. They undid Bors. And between the conflagration of desire flooding our bonds…

It was all I could do not to fall at her feet as well.

Yet I hesitated. What she asked… was complicated. Impossibly so.

I didn’t say anything, but Bors felt my reluctance in the bond. Stricken, he dropped his chin to his chest. Head bowed. Slumped.

It broke my heart. It broke her heart. She looked at me, her eyes dark with pain and understanding.

There was no question that I loved Bors as much as he loved me. I’d love to fuck him. I had fucked him several times in the centuries we’d roamed the earth, waiting for our queen. It’d been incredible.
