“The rocks are slippery. Help me step down into the grotto.”

I honestly thought she was talking to him rather than me, but her eyes never left mine. She lifted her hand, offering her fingers.

To me.

Trembling, I closed my hand around hers. I could certainly help my queen navigate moss-slicked rocks. I backed into the water. Sweat instantly broke out on every inch of my skin. The borrowed clothes clung to me, soaking in even more heat and trapping it against my body.

I was on fire. Boiled and baked to a crisp.

But what a fucking way to go.

She sat on a low partially-submerged rock ledge and gently pulled her fingers free. I didn’t say anything as she began unbuttoning my shirt. It was a relief to get the material off my body. It’d take time before my skin adjusted to being out of the water, let alone covered by tight, constricting clothes.

“How did I miss these before?” She touched the silver piercings in my nipples. Flicked them with her fingers.

And I thought I would die. Literally. I could not breathe. Darkness filled my vision.

She jerked my pants open. Relief. Too tight.

Everything inside me uncoiled. The kraken surged toward the surface of my mind. Tentacles unfurling. Mouth gaping wide to devour its prey.

Stop!I screamed internally.Flee!

I’d never been able to control the monster. No king could.

:But I can,:she whispered in my mind.

Her blood flowed through me, a dark, winding subterranean river. Something silver flashed in the murk. Dancing with joy. Tinkling a melody that only I could hear.

The kraken dove into that dark underground river, chasing the promise of silver tails.

Back inside the inner depths. Hidden in the basement of my mind.

I thought she would lock him there. That was what queens did to monsters. They were imprisoned where they couldn’t hurt anyone.

“I won’t allow you to hurt anyone,” she murmured against my lips. “But I refuse to imprison you. You will always swim free with me, Okeanos.”

I clenched my jaws, afraid if I tried to answer her that I would sob again.

She draped her arms around my neck and gently tugged me closer. “Will you feed me?”

I swallowed hard. Nodded. I wanted nothing more, even if I expired on the spot.

Until she continued. “Will you fuck me?”

I squeezed my eyes shut. Desperately afraid.

“Why are you afraid?”

Her mouth brushed my throat and my blood tried to turn my body into a giant fountain, eager to explode into her mouth and give her the power my queen required. Her thighs closed around my hips, drawing me closer. A siren, calling the ship toward rocky cliffs and treacherous straits.

I would go. Anywhere that she called.

More importantly, I would goaway. When I couldn’t hide the repulsive creature I was. When I couldn’t bear the horror in her eyes.

“Ah.” She lifted her head and stared deeply into my eyes. “I’ve seen you, Okeanos. I fed your beast. I wasn’t repulsed, but you wouldn’t know that, because you didn’t have my bond yet. You couldn’t feel my emotions. It was strange at first, but I don’t mind. I’ll feed you again. Anytime. Gladly. Man or kraken. I don’t fucking care.”

“Did you mean it?” My voice rasped, a raw agonizing thing of misery, but I had to know. “What you said to her before. Did you mean it?”
