Chapter 49: It’s a Party!
“Welcome to Hallie’shousewarming party!”
Jessica and a few of Hallie’s friends from college had helped make everything run smoothly, and they greeted Luke at the door as he came in, not alone, but with a couple of those party boys Hallie had seen the first time they ever met.
Hallie wasn’t too annoyed that he had invited his own guests since she wanted it to be a real party, and they didn’t have that many people to start with.
When an apartment became available in Jessica’s building, Hallie decided to take it.She liked working in the city, and she could live just two floors down from her best friend!
The day of her housewarming party, she came in to work wondering whether she should invite Luke. Finally, in the mood for a gamble, she decided to do it.
Finn wasn’t going to be there as he had a prior social engagement.Even though she wasn’t officially dating either Finn or Luke, she wanted to keep them separate, or else who knew what kind of chaos would ensue?
Now, here Luke was, probably ready to start some kind of riot just for the fun of it, even though his rival wasn’t there.
“You didn’t invite your boyfriend?”he said almost as soon as walking in the door.
“I don’t have a boyfriend,” she said.
“What about that handsome news anchor?”
“Are you worried about him?”Hallie asked with an evil smile.
She had worked out once with Finn, and he had seemed excited to get together with her again, though she wasn’t sure if they were just workout buddies or what. But she told Luke about him just to keep him on his toes.
“Of course not,” Luke said, putting on his ‘cool guy’ persona, “it’s a party!”
“That’s the spirit.Can I offer you a drink?”
“Do you even have to ask?”
She poured him a gin and tonic, and he downed it in his usual manner.
“For what it’s worth, I think it’s good that you’re meeting new people,” he said.“You need to have more fun.Besides, we both know no one else can stand up to me.”
“What?”Hallie knew she should be used to his boundless arrogance by now, but he always found new ways to show it.
“Yeah, I know you like me.I’m willing to wait a long time for you to admit it.But tonight, I’m just here to party and have a good time.Oh, I think I hear the cavalry arriving!”
Uproarious voices were coming from the hall, and pretty soon there was a knock on the door.A bunch of people poured into the apartment, all friends of Luke’s.
Hallie noticed that her female friends seemed to take an interest in Luke’s buddies.Pretty soon someone suggested that they should play ‘spin the bottle’.
“Really?”Jessica asked, wrinkling her nose, “Are we twelve years old?”
“Oh, come on, it’ll be fun,” Luke’s friend Connor insisted.
They all sat around on the floor in a circle. On the first spin, the bottle pointed at a friend of Hallie’s from college, Britta, opposite one of Luke’s friends.
They were not too shy about kissing each other. After one kiss, they moved onto the sofa and started seriously making out.
“Okay, looks like we lost some players,” Jessica said, giving them a side-eyed look.
Hallie was a bit worried about how Jessica would cope with Luke and his crazy friends, especially when the bottle coursed around to point directly at Jessica, with Rick on the other side.
“Uh...sorry, I just realized I can’t kiss anyone!”Jessica exclaimed.“I’m dating someone, and I think it might be serious.”
