Chapter 41: The Big Kahuna
“J.D.Santer, we meetagain,” Hallie said to buy some time.
How could she have forgotten about Santer? She still thought her theory was correct. The assistant very likely had a thing for her boss, no matter how hard she tried to hide it.
“What are you doing here?”Miss Santer pronounced like a scolding teacher. Her round glasses, worn with a perfectly tailored matching skirt and jacket, gave her an air of authority as she presided over the reception desk.“I thought I had made it quite clear you are longer needed.”
“I have an appointment with the boss,” Hallie said, raising her head high.“Maybe you’ve heard, I’ll be working here from now on.Marketing division.”
“Yeah, and maybe we’ll train an orangutan to do the accounting,” Miss Santer scoffed.“Get out, Luke is quite busy.He can’t see anyone.”
“So, the prince is guarded by a fearsome dragon.”Hallie said, grinning as Santer’s jaw dropped in outrage.
Determined to see the big kahuna no matter what, Hallie inched towards the hallway past the front desk.
“What do you think you’re doing?”Santer exclaimed, standing up from her desk like a tiger ready to pounce.“I’m going to call security.”
Hallie made a dash for the hallway beyond the reception desk, scanning each door for Luke’s name. Was he actually using the same name?Oh well, it was too late to back out now.Somehow, she hoped she would find his office.
“Get back here!”Miss Santer screeched, grabbing hold of Hallie’s arm.
Hallie knew she was close. She could feel it.Santer clung onto her like a desperately playful puppy, trying to weigh her down, but Hallie felt a rush of adrenaline that helped her power through.
“He’s busy with important work!”Santer screamed.
Hallie saw it up ahead: an office door with a big golden plaque that said “Lucas Lorenzen.”The door was ajar, and she burst in, dragging Miss Santer after her. They both stumbled and fell onto luxurious white carpet.
Luke had been sitting with his feet on the desk and throwing darts at a miniature dart board when he turned to see the two women.
Hallie caught the surprised look on his face just before she rolled onto the carpet, struggling to cast Santer off her.
“Dare I ask what’s happening?”
“I’m so sorry,” Miss Santer panted, “I know you didn’t want to be disturbed today.”
Hallie hoped to goodness that this was just Santer’s fabrication and that Luke actually wanted to see her.
