“Y-You are, baby.” I hiccupped as I cried. “I just don’t like you like this.” I winced when his grip on my arm drew tighter. “Donnie, you’re hurting me.”
Ignoring my cries and pleas, he slammed his lips onto mine. Usually, his touch made me melt; now it felt as if my skin was on fire. Not letting up, I grew tired of his nails digging into my arm, so I returned his kiss. For effects, I moaned into it. That must have pleased him because his grip loosened as he pulled me closer to him.
“You don’t know how worried I was when I tracked your location here instead of home.” He pulled back, placing his forehead on mine. “I don’t want you here anymore.”
Breathing forcefully, I tried to think of my words before I stated them. I didn’t want to say or do anything that would trigger him to lash out more. “Donnie, thisis my home, love.” He reared his head back and glared down at me. “This is where I live. I love spending time with you, but now and then, I need my own space, baby. You understand, don’t you?”
Looking at me as if I had two heads, he chuckled menacingly as he nodded his head. Placing his hand in his slacks, he stepped back from me. “You want me to kill you, huh?” He angled his head and grinned. “You want me to chop your ass up and spread you through the Valley for the wolves that you think live out here.”
“Baby—”
“Shut the fuck up, witch bitch!”
My mouth closed instantly. Donovan was a solid man, and overpowering him wasn’t an option. He was scaring me, though, so I needed to figure out how to maneuver this situation in my favor. Shifting my eyes from where he stood, I looked around for an item to aid me in my defense. Before I could locate anything, he began to shout.
“You think just because you need space, I’m supposed to give it to you? You think you’re better than me? Look around!” He spread his arms out before looking around my clusterfuck of a home. “This ain’t shit but a shed of junk! You have all of your little potions, spells, and incense, and think that’s all you need to rid yourself of me?” Shaking his head in disbelief, his eyes glowed a brighter yellow than they had been moments earlier. “You can burn all the sage you want, baby. You’re never getting rid of me. This ain’t the shit you see on television or read about in your black book. This is the real death row.”
Pacing my floor, he laughed and talked to himself like I wasn‘t in the room with him. Shaking from fear, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Trying my best to clear my mind, I chanted a spell that I knew would make this better since I had no physical reinforcements.
I was wrong, and now I see
Unbinding our love is my plea
This is no longer what I want to gain
Loose the hold and break the chain
As I chanted over and over, I felt the room around me go still. With my heart beating in my ears, I took one more deep breath before opening my eyes.
“Ahh!” I jumped back, hand over my thumping heart. Donovan was now standing directly in front of me, eyes glowing with the shadows dancing in them, darkening. “What are you?—”
“You thought some little Dr. Suess rhyme was going to make me leave?” He smiled brightly, looking crazier than ever. “Stop playing with me, Sabrena, before I show you what Hocus Pocus really is.” Turning to exit the kitchen, he kicked over my cauldron filled with all the essentials I was brewing for the nextfull moon. My eyes followed him as he made his way back into my living room. Posting on the wall, he crossed his ankles and folded his arms as he mugged me. “You have ten minutes to grab your shit so we can leave. Clock starts now.”
Darting out of the kitchen, I made my way to my bedroom and began packing clothes. I didn’t know how long he was going to make me stay with him this time, so I was grabbing as much as I could. Once I had what I could gather, I went to my Spell Nook and grabbed my spell book, placing it in my bag but out of his view.
There is no way I could continue to be with Donovan if this is how he’s going to act. Not only was he scaring the hell out of me, but he’d also gotten physical and threatened me. I wasn’t sure how negatively the spell had affected him, but I quickly found out and was hating what I now saw. Making my way back up the hall, I entered my once cozy living room, and his jumpy eyes snapped to mine as. Gripping the straps of my bag, I watched as his eyes lingered on it before he brought them back to mine.
Shifting his entire persona, he smirked and held his hand out to me. “Come on, baby. Let’s go home.”
Nervously, I placed my hand in his and let him lead me out of my sanctuary. Closing my door as best as he could, he glared at me once more before bringing my hand to his lips, peppering it with the calmest kisses. Once in his truck, I let out the breath I didn’t know I was holding. The flip in his behavior had frightened me more than the erratic chaos he caused earlier.
This spell wasn’t working out the way I wanted. I had infinite proof that he loves me and only me, but I no longer desired his love. I needed to find Gertrude quickly so I could figure out a way to reverse this. If I wasn’t able to undo the black magic I’d done, I was afraid of what the future truly held for Donovan and me.
Stepping into the restaurant,a rush of nervousness ran through me. It’s been three days since Donovan all but dragged me from my home, and he’s been on ten ever since. I’d found ways to keep him happy, which helped me avoid being physically pushed and shoved around his condo. I’d vocalized my need to be loved gently, but Donovan had proven not to care about my wants or needs. I’d put myself in the situation, so I was trying my best to enjoy what parts of being with him I could.
Tonight, he wanted to take me out for a nice dinner, and instead of putting up a fight, I decided to appease him. If he’d asked me to go out just a few weeks ago, I would have jumped for joy. Now, I was just praying he didn’t make a scene about the littlest thing.
“Good evening. I’m Malcolm, and I would like to welcome you to Prime and Platter Steakhouse.” The host smiled and greeted us, eyes bouncing back and forth between Donovan and me. “Do you guys have a reservation with us tonight? The wait is an hour long.”
Taking a scan around the restaurant, I hummed lowly at how expensive it looked. The gold and black decor gave it a very royal and romantic feel. The lights were just bright enough for you to see your way around, but the slight dimness created the ambiance. People sat and spoke lowly as the soft music played around them from the live band on the center stage. On any other night, I would jump for joy at the chance to dine somewhere so fancy, but as I stood here silently beside an agitated Donovan, it was the last place I wanted to be.
“Do you think I would bring my girl in this bitch and not have called ahead?” he shouted, gripping my hand and causing me to shrink into myself from embarrassment. “You think I would want her to stand here, waiting on display for all you niggas to look at her?”
“Baby,” I spoke meekly as I placed my hand on his arm to calm him. “He didn’t mean that. He was only asking?—”
Jerking his head in my direction, I snatched my hand back instantly before closing my mouth. The yellow in his eyes was as bright as ever now, while the shadows were more profound. The man before me is someone I didn’t recognize. The man before me is someone I no longer want.
“Are you telling me you want these niggas looking at you?” He hissed, slamming me into his chest. My face burned red at the attention we were now getting. People in earshot of us had now stopped to stare. “Do you want this nigga?”
