“She’s on the highway heading towards Durham,” he says.

“I’ll call Kelsea. Maybe she just needed to get away,” Everett says, dialing Kelsea’s number. I see anger in his features when her phone goes to voicemail as well.

“Track this number, Breaker,” I tell him, rattling off Kelsea’s cell number.

“That’s fucking weird. She’s in Ember’s old apartment building. Hold on,” I hear Breaker say, the sound of him typing furiously coming through the speaker.

“Why would she be there?” I ask, not expecting him to really know the answer.

“We have a fucking problem, Elijah. I put a tracer on the phone Justin’s been using a while back just to keep tabs on the fucker. His location and Kelsea’s are pinging right next to each other,” he says. I feel my blood run cold. From the corner of my eye, I see Everett dialing Kelsea again and again, but she doesn’t answer.

“Ember wouldn’t do this, right? She wouldn’t go there alone, would she?” Rory asks quietly, fear evident in her voice.

“She would for Kelsea,” I say, the pit in my stomach twisting tighter and tighter at the thought of her being anywhere near Justin.

“FUCK!” Everett throws his phone across the room, letting his anger get the best of him and smashing it against the wall. “Where is my fucking sister, Breaker?” He yells.

“I’ll send you her location now, but she’s got about an hour and a half head start on you guys. She’s only about 45 minutes away from them,” he says as my phone lights up with his message.

“Keep your eyes on them. See if you can tap into the building’s security cameras and keep us posted,” I say, hanging up on him.

I climb the stairs two and a time, grab my pistol from the bedside table, slide it into the holster at my back and we’re out the door in seconds. Everett and I can ride faster than we could drive in the highway traffic. My mind races with thoughts of everything that could happen before we can get to them. I think about the tiny heartbeat I watched flickering on the ultrasound screen this morning. Why would Ember take this risk?

Rory stays behind, just in case, with the promise that we’ll keep her posted on what’s going on. I just hope Ember can hold her own until we can make it there.
