I laugh easily and then nuzzle in closer to his chest, slipping off into the deepest sleep I’ve gotten in years.
Chapter 24 – Rhett
It’s been two weeks since Jael and I spent the night together at my place, and we’ve spent almost every night since then on my back deck, gazing up at the stars overhead and catching up on our lives while making new memories together.
If you were to ask me how I would label these days, I’d say they’ve been the good ones. Because there’s no way in hell any of the days that I’ve lived in the past could rival these ones.
I built a screened-in patio to protect us from the inevitable mosquitoes that have shown up when the sun goes down in the late, North Carolina summer. The area that once featured a couch with a view of my soon-to-be natural pond pool now houses a mattress that I brought out from my spare bedroom.
It wasn’t getting any use in there anyhow and this way, I have a soft place to make love to her every night underneath the stars and serenaded by the croaking of the bull frogs.
I’ve never been one for big, romantic gestures or ambiance when it comes to sex, but being back with Jael has me makingevery effort to impress her. Maybe it’s because I’ve been hoping like hell that she’ll stay when her contract ends, or maybe it’s because I want the memories to be so strong for her that she can’t forget me either.
Lately, I’ve spent my days at work distracted, thinking about how to make our evenings even better when she isn’t tied up at the hospital. Planning new ways to touch her, take her, and hear her moaning my name like she’s forgotten anything or anyone else exists outside of our little world.
But now it’s Monday morning again, and July is slipping away, dragging Jael’s planned departure closer with every passing day. I’m not ready to let her go, not yet maybe not ever, and I don’t know what more I can do to convince her to stay. It’s not the distance—Whitewood Creek is only a four-hour drive to Richmond. I could make that work if it came to it. What has me twisted in knots is the life waiting for her back in that city.
Her ex-fiancé, for starters, the same smug bastard I’d love nothing more than to knock out cold. And then there’s her job, the one that keeps her bouncing from city to city, dangling the kind of paycheck that makes her think it’s worth leaving this place behind. Leavingusbehind.
Because she worked like hell for her degree and I’m proud of her for doing it. I’d never ask her to give it up for me but dammit if I don’t want to.
I lean back in my desk chair, staring blankly at the pile of paperwork in front of me. All I can think about is Jael—what we still need to talk about, what I’m so damn afraid to bring up. I’m lost in thought, trying to piece together a plan, when the door handle rattles.
And just like that, she’s there, stepping into my office like I somehow manifested her.
“Hey, Rhett,” she says, grinning as she swings a paper bag full of to-go food fromFrank’sin her hand and looking like a goddamn dream.
She has one of those tiny dresses I’ve realized she likes wearing when she isn’t in her scrubs, her brown hair is in a messy ponytail, and she isn’t wearing a stitch of makeup on her pretty face. Just the way I’ve always loved her.
“I thought you might be hungry, so I figured I’d bring you lunch before I start my next three-night stretch of shifts.”
“Oh, I’m hungry alright, but I have something different in mind for lunch now that you’re here,” I say, standing up and kicking the door closed as I pick her up and sit her on the top of my desk.
She squeals while I yank at the hem of the dress and push it up and over her hips. The bags of food fall to the ground in a heap and my hands find her purple, lace panties, dragging them to the floor to join the food.
“Rhett! What about your assistant?” she whispers.
I groan, spreading my palm flat over the top of her pussy before cupping it. I love how small she looks in relation to my hands. I love how soft and smooth she’s always been compared to my rough.
“Don’t care. Need you. Now.”
I know I still need to work out what we need to talk about in my mind, but I’m a famished man, and eating Jael right now is my priority.
I lower my face and take a deep breath of her, enjoying the way she smells so uniquely her. My tongue darts out and spikes inside of her, getting my first taste of her for the day and I swear it’s like a drug.
Jael moans and gently lays back on the desk, stretching out into a starfish shape with her limbs open for me. Her legs wrap around my shoulders easily and I’m convinced I’ll never look at this office the same way again. I’ve never taken a woman in here before but fucking her might be the end of it for me.
Her hips raise, arching into my face as her hands weave into my hair, guiding me where she wants me.
“Show me how you like it, baby.”
I suck her swollen clit harder, alternating between flicking it with the tip of my tongue and lapping at it like the dog that I am for her. I pull back slightly before sliding two fingers inside of her just to watch her pussy stretch and clench around me.
“Yes, Rhett, just like that.”
“I can tell how much you needed me. You didn’t just come here for the food, did you?”
She rocks her head back and forth on the table and I smile before lowering my face again, licking her from one end to the other. My thumb gives attention to her clit while I suck it, causing her to moan even harder.
