“No.”

“Well, how do you know he was there then?”

He exhales a long breath. “Jake’s been sending messages to your old phone.”

“My old phone?” I’m confused. I didn’t realise he still had it.

“Mike has it,” Logan says, flicking his head in the direction of the other man. “We’re using it to track him.”

“How many other messages are there?” I ask.

“Five or six.”

“And they were all sent today?”

“No.” He bows his head. “Over the last few days.”

“And I’m only finding out now?”

He takes a step towards me. “I was trying to protect you.”

“I have a right to know these things,” I say, a little angrier than I anticipated. “This isn’t your battle.”

“Brooke.” He reaches for my arm as I turn away, but I manage to shrug out of his grip before fleeing to my room.

“Knock, knock,” I say, standing in the open doorway of Logan’s bedroom. He’s sitting on the edge of his bed, his head cradled in his hands. He lifts his gaze to me, and the look I see on his face hurts. “Can I come in?” A small smile tugs on his lips as he taps the bed beside him. “I’m sorry for overreacting.” I know he thought what he was doing was for the best.

“I’m sorry I kept things from you.” He drapes his arm around my shoulder, pulling me to him. “I…”

“It’s okay,” I say, cutting him off. “I understand why you did it.” He brings his face down, planting a kiss on my hair. “Did you find him?”

“No. We searched the mall and the surrounding areas for over an hour, but there was no sign of him.”

I sigh. “So, nothing’s changed?”

“Yes, and no.”

“What do you mean by that?” I ask, drawing back to see his face.

“We’re going to have to be extra careful from now on.”

“I’m not giving up my job.”

“You won’t have to. We’ll work something out,” he says. He points to the pile of bags sitting just inside the door. “Chris brought your bags up. I’ve made some space in my wardrobe for your things.”

“There’s a wardrobe in the spare room.”

“I want you in this room, with me,” he says.

I hold up my hands in front of me. “This is moving way too fast for me.”

He shifts his body around until he’s facing me and reaches for my hands. “Brooke, I know this is only temporary, and that you’re planning on leaving once it’s safe to do so. I’m not asking you to move in with me, but for the short time I do have you here, I want you near me. I don’t think it’s too much to ask. I know this situation is less than ideal for you, but you seem happy enough being here.”

“I hate feeling like a prisoner, but you’re definitely the silver lining in all of this.” Plus, I do feel safer when I’m with him.

“I’m great boyfriend material.”

“And I’m sure you’ll make some lucky woman very happy one day,” I say, trying to keep a straight face.
