They’d seen the flames and called for help before they arrived. Ash, Mathias, and Holt pulled us all out just in time, too.
It was a close call and, apparently, I was extremely lucky. Outside of damage to my throat and minor lung repercussions, I only had some minor burns outside of my legs and feet.
My shoes protected my toes, but the shoes were melting and the third degree burns weren’t pretty. I had to wear bandages and the guys had to help keep up with my ointments and changing them out.
Walking hurt, but I was getting the full princess treatment.
“There you are,” Jackson said as he joined me on the back porch of our temporary home.
“Morning,” I said as I took the cup of coffee from his hands. The steam was rising in the cool morning air. Fall had officially hit us now and I loved the morning calm out here as the leaves fell.
Even more with a warm drink and an alpha by my side.
He settled next to me, pulling me into his lap gently. I didn’t protest, just snuggled in until I was comfy and took a sip of my sweet coffee. He made it just right like always.
“Whats on the agenda today?” he asked.
“I have to see the doctor to check over the burns. Then I was thinking we could talk about our outfits for Night of the Nerds,” I said evenly.
He froze under me, recognizing the name of the convention right away.
“What?” he asked carefully, making me smile. I took another sip just to drag out the excitement before answering.
“I may or may not have tickets for us, Taryn and her pack, and Bea to go to the convention,” I said with a grin.
“No,” he gasped. “They were sold out. I tried.”
“Well, I had a little help,” I admitted. “Taryn, Bea, and I spent an entire morning on our phones and laptops trying to snag passes.”
“What? How? I mean, that’s insane, sweets. You really got them? They sold out in like twenty minutes,” he argued.
“They did, but you were in practice and I know you guys talked about it, so I made sure you got to go,” I said with a shrug.
He buried his nose in my neck and breathed in, laughing softly.
“How did I get so lucky?”
“I’m the one who has been carried everywhere for weeks now, I think I’m the lucky one,” I said. “You guys have been amazing.”
“You’d have done the same for us,” he said. At least he didn’t apologize for Henry. They’d tried, multiple times… each.
At the end of the day it was no one’s fault but Henry’s. They didn’t ask for this and it wasn’t exactly a normal thing to face.
Henry was unhinged and something about Cy and his success and happiness triggered him.
Mental illness was real and it wasn’t something Cy could have prevented.
It wasn’t our problem anymore. We survived and now we were going to have a lifetime together. We would be living our dream lives, having an amazing house in Willow Lake and a loft in the city, working incredible jobs, and surrounding ourselves with family and friends.
Speaking of.
“We better get ready. Cy’s mom is planning a big brunch and should be here soon,” I mused.
“One of many,” he joked. Not just Griff’s family moved close by, Cy’s as well. Now that most of his siblings were off to college it was just his parents and two in high school. They were happy to be around their big brother and didn’t protest too much.
And now I had more family than I knew what to do with. They’d accepted me and my friends as their own. The babies were more spoiled than ever and so were we.
When I told them about our little surprise, I knew that it would only get better.
