Devin didn’t say anything, just made small noises of happiness while he ate the soup. I don’t know why he’d come to my dorm instead of going home and taking care of himself, but I wanted to make sure he was all right.
Silly alpha thinking he’s immortal, most likely.
Not for the first time, I wondered if it would be better if I moved into the penthouse. The pack was so busy that having to come back and forth between their place and the dorms to see me was probably a bit much for them. Even when I went to them, they had to pick me up because I couldn’t drive.
If I lived with them, then we would always be around each other, there to help and there to support. They would be able to get real-time updates on the baby too. Knowing them as well as I did, I also knew they would be a lot more relaxed if I was living in the same house as them, where the security wasmuchbetter than the rundown dormitories.
Devin finished the soup, smacking his lips together as he started drinking the water. He was moving as if he were in a trance. I knew that kind of sickness all too well, when your entire body felt heavy and your mind was blurry, all stuffed full of cotton wool.
“Come on, let’s get you some more sleep,” I said, taking the mug off him. He looked at me, almost confused, but did as I said, handing me the empty water bottle, too, and lying down.
Snuggling into his side, I rested my head on Devin’s chest. That smoked applewood scent invaded my senses in the best way, lulling me to sleep, right along my sweet, sick alpha.
Chapter 26
Devin
Ivaguely remembered wanting to go to Mable’s to check if she was okay, but I didn’t remember much after that.
Before I even opened my eyes, the overwhelming scent of maple hit my nose, going straight to my brain like an electric shock. Where was I? But then it was wrapped around me like a warm hug, keeping me comfortable and cozy. There was a weight on my chest, and when I cracked one eye open to look down, I saw Mable was fast asleep on my chest.
She stirred in my arms, looking up at me as she woke. “Oh, hey, how are you feeling?” she asked, stretching languidly as she spoke, which only served to rub her against me, causingotherthings to stir too.
“Uh… fine,” I said, my mind still foggy and slow. “What happened?”
Her hand touched my face, and she smiled delicately at me. “You had a bit of a fever and seemed out of it. You came here, insisting you were checking on me, but you ended up passing out in my nest after I fed you some soup. You’re not warm anymore, though. Are you sure you feel okay?”
“I feel totally fine,” I affirmed, shrugging with a lopsided grin. “It’s like I wasn’t even sick. What the hell?”
Mable nodded, her eyes twinkling as she sat up straighter. “It was just a twenty-four-hour bug, most likely. I had it as well, but I feel great now.”
“What time is it?” I asked, looking around. I had no idea where my phone was or even what day it was at that point. I’d slept so peacefully that it felt like I’d slipped into a whole new plane of existence. One filled with good dreams and the syrupy scent of my omega surrounding me.
“It’s already midday,” Mable said with a scrunch of her nose. “If you didn’t wake up soon, I was going to order some lunch and not bother you.”
As she said those words, my stomach gurgled with hunger. Mable giggled, giving me a knowing look.
“I think I may be hungry,” I admitted.
Mable turned over, picked up her phone and handed it to me. “Luckily for you, I have a plethora of delivery apps we can choose from.”
I nodded, chuckling as Mable scooted next to me and proudly displayed her phone.
“And maybe while we wait for it to arrive, we can discuss the shitty security this building has.” Leveling her with a look, I raised a brow. It’d been way too easy for me to slip in. I remembered that much.
Mable frowned at me. “This place has okay security! I’ve never had any problems.”
“I got in without even using the intercom yesterday! I could have been anyone at your door.”
This omega was trying to get herself killed or something, and the need to protect her surged through me, undeniable and intense.
A sweet smile graced her face as she patted my cheek. “But it wasn’tanyone. It was a sick alpha I’m getting rather attached to.”
Twenty minutes later, we were enjoying a lunch of Italian food. I had ordered spaghetti and meatballs, and Mable had gotten herself some fettuccine Alfredo with broccoli. I didn’t have to pester her to eat her vegetables, which was nice, considering how often I was on the guys’ asses about it—and a bit of a shock, if I was honest.Girl has a hell of a sweet tooth.
“Stop smiling at me all smugly. Notallveggies are evil.” She speared a head of broccoli and delicately shoved it into her mouth while holding firm eye contact. “And these are covered in sauce, which makes themmuchmore bearable.”
“You’ve been eating nothing but sour candy and junk food for weeks.” I raised my brows at her, smirking. “I’m just saying, it’s a shock to see you eat something green.”
