“She’s beautiful,” he said, his eyes a little glassy.
“I know,” I agreed wholeheartedly, feeling emotional again. The hormone drop was definitely a thing, and I was ready to feel a bit more like myself again.
He cleared his throat, blinking quickly. “I've brought the car around front, with the car seat ready to go.”
Percy nodded, grabbing one of the diaper bags. “Thank you.”
Just then, Devin came back in, smiling and giving Spencer a pat on the shoulder.
“Spencer is driving the car you’re taking home with Percy. The rest of us will follow,” Devin explained. “As much as we wanted to drive you home from the hospital, Spencer is a professional driver who is highly skilled at evasive maneuvers, and he is going to be driving very precious cargo. I trust his skills while behind the wheel more than I trust our own.”
I bit back a laugh. I doubted we were going to need Spencer'sevasivemaneuvers to get home, but Devin’s concern was sweet, overprotective papa bear that he was.
Still, getting us to the car was a production in itself. The guys refused to let me walk, even though I had the urge to move around. They insisted I sit in a wheelchair and took me right up to the door of the car. A small part of me wanted to fight them on it, but I was kind of enjoying their sweet, overbearing worry. I was still weak from giving birth, so having my alphas fret over me was actually rather welcome.
I had also been instructed to take it as easy as possible. Apparently, if I was very cautious now, I could avoid a longer recovery in the future. So…
And then I saw the production waiting at the curb.
“What on earth?” I giggled when I saw the back of the car.
Maggie’s side was pristine, the baby seat and one small blanket ready for our little bump to travel in style.
The seat next to her, my seat, looked like it had been invaded by a pile of blankets.
“Wanted to make sure you were comfortable,” Saint explained, his sweet face scrunching up with some mild embarrassment. “Considering all of the trauma to your lady parts, we thought sitting may be a little uncomfortable. Naturally, the only solution to that is loads of blankets.”
Laughing, I clambered into the car and started rearranging the blankets so I could get my seat belt on while Devin carefully strapped Maggie into her car seat. I didn't miss the way that Spencer was hovering behind him, watching his every move with shrewd eyes, ensuring that our daughter was safely strapped in.
“Just tell me that there are crotch packs, sitz baths, and lots of coffee and snacks, and I’ll be plenty happy.”
Jasper smiled, giving me a kiss on the head before standing up. “Well, you will beplentyhappy, then.”
Chapter 46
Jasper
“See, the Chargers are thebestteam. You want to know why? Because your daddies play for them, so you have to wear the team colors.” I cooed at Maggie as I changed her onesie. Our daughter had captured my heart so damn quick, I was obsessed. “That’s why we all got you this. Chargers, baby.”
I did that thing where you scream-whisper, not wanting to startle her. Maggie just stared up at me, her little gray-blue eyes searching mine. They were supposed to change, apparently, her hair too. We were told that it wouldn’t be a surprise if both got much darker, or even if all her hair fell out.
“There ya go. Now, don’t go having a blowout in this one, okay?”
She just cooed, and all I could do was smile.
As far as babies went, so much was wild and unexpected, but nothing shook me more than the instant love I’d felt for her. It was the best surprise. I’d been so worried I would be terrible with a baby or she would freak me out, but all I wanted to do was hold her. Something I was highly discouraged from doing all the time because “she needs her rest.”
Bogus. She can sleep on me.
With the baby all cleaned up, I lifted her from the floor and looked back at the sofa. Our stunning Mable was fast asleep in her little couch nest. She had insisted on leaving her full nest to wander around the house a bit, because at two days post-partum, she was already going out of her mind. Still, we made sure she didn’t push it and stayed lying down as much as possible.
Thankfully, nighttime feeding and healing internally had turned Mable into a pro at napping. Anytime she sat down for a few minutes, she ended up curled up and sleeping. It probably didn't hurt that we had made multiple nests around the house, along with spots for the baby to sleep and change her. All of our beds now resembled their own nests, made with materials that we knew Mable loved. The sofa was a nest, and there was even one on the arm chair.
We wanted to make sure our girl was comfortable. We were oddly powerless. We couldn’t wave a wand and make Mable feel better, no matter how much we wanted to do that. So, instead, we were working overtime to make sure that every single one of her needs was met and she didn't have to lift a finger.
“It looks like Daddy Jasper picked the outfit out.” Percy chuckled as he entered the room. He strode right over to us, bending down and blowing a raspberry on Maggie's stomach. She wasn't giggling yet, but she did wiggle excitedly at the sensation.
“I'm teaching her early that she needs to rep her family’s team’s colors!”
