Being so busy, time had flown by, but unfortunately, I didn’t get to spend hardly any of it with Beckett. He’d stopped by Lake Hills one day and brought me lunch, but he’d only had an hour before he had to be back at his office.
He’d invited me to his house tonight for dinner, but I had to stop by my grandmothers’ after I was done here, and I didn’t know what they might need from me.
I really wanted to, though. I wanted to see him. Before I met Beckett, I didn’t care so much about my lack of free time. But now that I had someone I wanted to spend time with, it was really freaking annoying.
I knew it was ridiculous, it felt ridiculous every time I thought it, but I missed him. Barely a week without seeing him, even with a number of calls and texts in between, and I longed to see him in person. To touch and kiss him.
I was attached already, and whether I wanted to or not, I knew there was nothing I could do about it.
“Addie?”
“Yes, sorry,” I stuttered. “No, it didn’t scare Beckett off. The exact opposite, actually.”
“Wait, what does that mean?”
Looking down at the desk, I didn’t notice Ashley standing in the doorway until she knocked lightly on the glass.
“Sorry to interrupt,” she said.
“You’re not interrupting,” I said with a smile, then added to Bri, “I gotta go. Love you, bye.”
“Wait, but you can’t just—” she began to argue, but I hung up before I could hear any more objections.
“What’s up?” I asked, straightening in my chair and folding my arms over the sleek dark desk.
She hitched her thumb over her shoulder and motioned down the hall. “Caroline wanted me to grab you. She’s in a meeting about an upcoming event and wanted you to join.”
Nodding, I grabbed my laptop and notebook. “Are they in her office, or…?”
“They’re in the first conference room up front,” she said.
I smoothed my hands down my light pink, pleated skirt and checked my matching hair in the mirror next to the door before I strode out into the hallway. I stepped around the corner and peered through the large glass window into the conference room. I only glanced inside long enough to see three people, two of whom were seated facing the tall windows looking out onto the courtyard, the other being Caroline, who looked as perfect and professional as ever with her short blonde hair and pristinely applied makeup.
Caroline waved me in, and I pushed through the door.
“I’m not sure if you’ve all met—she helped me with Miles and Stephen’s wedding earlier this year. But this is my amazing assistant coordinator, Addie,” Caroline announced. I smiled and rounded the table, but all the air was sucked from the room when I saw who sat on the other side.
TWENTY-THREE
ASSISTANT COORIDINATOR
Addison
Beckett smoothly stoodfrom his chair and buttoned his suit jacket, but Natalie next to him reached her hand out first. She was Caroline’s best friend, so of course I recognized her.
“Yes, Addie,” Natalie said. “It’s so nice to see you again.” I blinked a few times and shook her outstretched hand.
My eyes jumped to Beckett and the slight, humorous smile on his lips. He stuck out his hand, too, and I held my breath as I took it.
“Addison,” he said when I wrapped my fingers around his. He squeezed once and held on longer than necessary, letting our touch linger for a moment.
A bolt of electricity shot up my arm, and I tensed so I didn’t shiver at the contact.
I was tempted to out our relationship right then and there, but instead, I decided to follow his lead. At least for the duration of the meeting. The pieces clicked together as I dropped my hand and took my seat across from Natalie.
It was Crawford Law’s thirtieth anniversary party. He’dmentioned it a few times, and I should have realized he was serious about having Caroline plan it.
That much Caroline explained before we dove into the nitty-gritty details like venue, food, guest list, and attire. I opened my laptop and took copious notes, trying hard to ignore the way Beckett was leaning back in his chair, an elbow propped on the armrest and his fingers resting against his chin. His eyes were nearly glued to me, and I could feel my cheeks burning with every second.
