“You are?”Maia gasped out. She let go of her embrace and bowed down to the floor. “Forgive me, Lady. I did not know. I will take whatever punishment you give me.”

 “What is a Kou?”Olivia asked.

“You are my Kou and I am yours. The Heart Binding makes us do that.”

“Get up, Maia,”Olivia said as she lowered herself and pulled the girl to her feet. “You never need to bow to me. I am not a Lady. Where I am from, we do not have those titles. I am no one special.”

Kaias frowned. “She is to bow to you as any other person would. As my Kou, disrespecting you is disrespecting me.”

“I never agreed to being treated in this way.”

“You did agree. We are one.”

Olivia glared at him. Something was missing in their communication. She understood what it meant to be Heart Bound and where that put her in their world, but it felt foreign to her. There had to be a middle ground. Somewhere where she could be herself, treated as an equal and a friend, without sacrificing her independence.

Being followed by guards and treated as royalty was a world she never really wanted. In his world, she wasn’t just a queen, but married to a god. Existential dread crossed her mind. She thought she had gotten over this, but it was one thing to understand it on paper and another to see it in practice.

“I agreed,”she nodded, “but we need to talk more about this.”

She stared into his eyes, daring him to say something about it. Kaias nodded slowly.

 “We will.”

Olivia swallowed the anxiety growing in her throat. As he stared at her, she felt how heavy the basket of beignets was.

 CHAPTER TEN

Kaias shut their bedroom door behind them, keeping out the ears of the staff. The sun was setting, allowing the deep blue and amethyst of the night sky to filter through. Olivia shifted her weight and looked towards the temple. She frowned at the sight of the pods and sighed.

“Perhaps we can find somewhere else for the pods.”She said, attempting to barter something against the growing tension between her and Kaias.

He hadn't spoken a word to her since they left the temple together. A carriage pulled by two smaller Draxzons took them to the palace. For the whole trip, Kaias watched her. His dark eyes stayed narrowed. Olivia, on the other hand, kept quiet. She stared back at him, unwavering in her own resolve.

Kaias grabbed her arm and whipped her around so that she was looking at him. His eyes bore into her soul.

“You do not undermine me in front of my subjects.”

“I didn't undermine you,”Olivia scoffed. She tried to pull free, but his grip on her was firm. “You're the one with a problem.”

“Problem?”Kaias snorted out. “I have no problems. You said I couldtrustyou, but you are going against what I say.”

“I haven't done anything like that,”Olivia shook her head. “Telling a child I care for not to bow down is going against your word.”

“It is going against my values.”

“It would go against my beliefs to follow anarchaicbelief like that.”She retorted.

“What is that word? Why do you speak a foreign language when you are my Kou?”Kaias shook his head. “You live in my kingdom, you speak my language.”

“Wow,” Olivia scoffed. She grabbed his hand and pried his finger off her. The sharpness of his knuckle bit down on her delicate skin. “Fuck. What fucked up evolutionary bullshit is this?”

 “Speak my language.”

Olivia rolled her eyes. “Learn mine.”

Kaias took a step back and sighed. “I'm trying.”

Olivia stared at him, unsure how to feel. She wanted to hit him and yell, but was it right to cry when he didn't understand? Taking a slow, deep breath, she forced herself to calm down. Across from her, Kaias was doing the same thing. His chest bulged in and out, causing a slight distraction.
