“Okay. I’m not really into surprises, but for you, I guess I can’t wait to see what’s next.”

He turns to face me, arms snatching my waist, and that smug smile of his creeps up. “Speaking of surprises, I’ve got one for you.”

Before I can protest, because I’m going to, his lips brush mine, trying to distract me with a teasing kiss. I try to pull away, but his grip tightens, holding me there for a moment longer.

I break the kiss with a pout, eyeing him suspiciously. “I don’t like surprises.”

He smirks against my lips. “Oh, you’ll like this one.”

I frown, stepping back just enough to get a better look at him. “Tell me what it is.”

He laughs. “Do you know the meaning of a surprise?”

I cross my arms, blocking his access to me.

He chuckles and turns away from me, the robe swishing around his legs.

 “Where are you going?”

 “To get your surprise.”

 “In a robe?”

 “Yes.”

 “Don’t you dare.”

He continues toward the front door completely unbothered. “Don’t eat the cake.”

 “It’s not frosted yet!”

He glances back over his shoulder, eyes glinting with that annoying confidence. “I know a recipe.”

“Of course you do,” I mutter under my breath, shaking my head.

 He winks. “Be right back.”

The door clicks shut behind him.

I hate surprises, but something inside me is dying to know what his surprise is.

I SMOOTH A layer of chocolate frosting on the side of the cake.

“You’re a tease.” Jade taps her short, work-worn nails on the table.

Nails that have seen the soil and the long days of running a ranch and lodge. A woman who doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty.

 I love that about her.

“Am I?” I smirk at her sitting across from me.

Her eyes narrow with playful accusation for not letting me help ice the cake.
