“Are they all that tacky?”

“Moving on. Axe throwing, archery, and-”

“I’ll do axe throwing.” McKenna pretends to throw an axe across the room.

 “Me too!” Libby shouts.

“Perfect. I’ll pair them up with—”

Wheeler raises his hand. “Lena and I can take the crafts.”

“But Lena, wouldn’t you rather do (whatever) with me?” Bode asks.

 “I would love to.”

Sammy joins Silver in assigning jobs. There are lots of things to do. Removated buildings and cabins, and fences are to be mended. Despite the hard work ahead, there’s a sense of joy and fulfillment.

My plans to leave are thwarted by the excitement of the kids. They’re eager and happy and I’m not going to take that away from them.

Before I know what’s happened, the entire family has cleared out of the house to tackle their days mission. I even somehow manage to get paired up with Ayla.

“Come on. We gotta practice this whole married thing.” Ayla grabs my hand and drags me back to my bedroom.

 Chapter Six

 SAMMY

 ––––––––

 “WHERE’S ELSIE?”

“She’s mad at you, brother. You took off without a word. And then you come back married. Again without a word. She’s pissed. You need to talk to her.” When I say nothing he continues. “We’re staying in the house on the (name) property while our house is being built. Go.”

“And leave you here barking out orders.”

“What difference does it make? You’re not planning on staying. You might as well sell me the second half of this land.”
