Chapter Ten

MAGGIE

––––––––

“SOMETIMES, WHEN A MANand a woman enjoy each other’s company —”

Cole lifts his hand to his granddad. “I’m gonna stop you right there. We don’t need to discuss whatcha y’all we’re doing in there. It was abundantly clear. But rather, why?”

“I was more wondering how,” I mutter under my breath.

“Yoga,” Grams says at the same time Fred says, “Viagra.” They smile at one another with the stupid glowing aftermath of a good time.

I rub my eyes. “Sorry I asked.”

“So am I,” Cole grumbles, wiggling uncomfortably in the chair. He rests his ankle on his knee. Then sets it down. Lifts the other ankle to his other knee. Then sets it down.

“Stop acting like a couple of damn children.” Grumpy Fred is back. “We’re all adults here. We all know we have sex to experience pleasure.”

“Ahhh!” I cover my ears. “Stop! Why are we sitting around the table discussing it like it’s family night dinner?”

“You asked why.” Fred snaps open a soda and drops in two straws.

“You misunderstood my question.” Cole rubs the scruff along his jaw line. “You two loathe each other. I literally removed a lamp out of your hand that you planned to throw at her.”

“And you were beating him with a rolling pin yesterday,” I say to grams. “You’re both toxic together. How did you end up ... you know ...” I’m at a loss of words.

“Having sex.”

Cole and I groan at the same time. There are some things a person just can’t unsee. Their sexy time tops the list.

Fred offers my grams his soda. She sips one straw and he sips the other. It’s cute and adorable. And then visions of Fred doing naughty things to my grams pop in my head.

I stand up. “I need to go for a walk.”

“Sit down,” Grams barks out.

I reluctantly lower myself to the chair. I share an awkward look with Cole. Ten minutes ago I’d been ready to let him do naughty things to me. Now, I can’t even think about naughty things.

Grams takes Fred’s hand. “Yesterday, Fred and I had a water fight over the balcony.”

Cole fists the denim on his lap. “Before or after I took the lamp away?” He releases the denim and fists it again, repeatedly.

“After.” Fred rubs the top of grams hand. Again, adorable until his hand squeezing her bare ass flashes in my head.

“The mug I was using to throw water at him slipped out of my hand and hit Fred in the head.” Grams crooked finger slides a piece of old man’s Fred’s tousled hair away from forehead. They’re so damn cute. Why didn’t they just lock the door so I could focus on anything else?

“The damn thing knocked me unconscious.” Fred kisses the top of my grams hand. “This lil’ lady saved me.”
