“Any regrets?” He forced his body to stay relaxed.

“No. Oh, I spoke to my parents earlier, we have to have a wedding.”

“That’s fine. It’ll be fun, though I don’t envy you the planning. The women in this town are likely to be all over it.”

She snorted and handed him the bowl with a little bit of icing left. “I can’t wait. Also, my parents want to visit so that they can meet you.”

He scraped the side of the bowl with his finger, covering it with icing and made a line on her neck.

“Simon!”

He sucked on her neck, licking at the icing, hardening as her body went pliant beneath his hands. He bit down on her skin, leaving a mark and loving every part of it. He put another finger in the bowl. She squirmed in his arms.

“Don’t you dare, Simon,” she laughed and pushed away.

He caught her shirt as she tried to get away. They both looked up as Marcus, one of his enforcers knocked on the back door and entered.

Marcus grunted and he tensed.

“Where?”

Three short grunts was Marcus’ answer. He cursed and gripped Calita.

“What’s wrong?”

“Trespassing, eastern border of the property, I need to go check it out.”

She tiptoed to kiss him. “Of course, I’ll keep dinner in the oven for you.”

“It may take a while, so eat if you get too hungry.” He nuzzled into her neck.

She scoffed. “I’ll be fine. Go.” She pushed on his chest.

He gave her one last kiss and followed his enforcer out the back door.

Calita watched him leave, trepidation skittering through her stomach. She hadn’t understood any of the grunting sounds Marcus made, but it was clear that Simon took it seriously. She went to wash the dishes to occupy her hands. Becca walked into the kitchen from the living room and pulled the roasted chicken she’d made from the oven.

“If you’re done, Becca, you can leave. I’ll clean up and everything.” It would give her something to do.

Becca huffed and continued what she was doing.

“Is there a problem?” She’d been nothing but nice to the woman, she didn’t understand her attitude.

Becca took off the apron she wore and hung it on the wall. “I don’t have a problem.”

“You know he’s not yours, right?” It was impulsive, and honestly, Calita couldn’t believe it had come out of her mouth.

“Yeah, well, you made sure of that.” Becca turned her back and reached for her purse.

“Yeah, you can definitely go, and take your stank attitude with you.”

Becca gave her a harsh stare right before the lights went out. The smell of smoke registered a moment later, and Calita’s heart started racing. Smoke started to fill the kitchen and she pulled her shirt up over her mouth.

“Follow me!” Becca yelled into the darkness.

They raced for the back door, rushing from the house, not sure what part was on fire. She followed Becca into the forest behind the house, the same place she’d gone walking over a week ago. She knew walking too far would take her off the property, so she stopped. Becca kept going, and Calita turned back towards the house. No way was she getting lost in the woods again.

Becca probably knew the woods like the back of her hands, but she was too far away from Calita to follow. What should she do? It was dark as hell, and the light from the house didn’t penetrate the darkness around her. She couldn’t even make out the shape of the house from as far away as they were. She pulled out her phone to call Simon. A hand slapped over her mouth, a noxious smell going up her nose. She struggled for a few moments before everything went dark.
