Selena looked around nervously and raised her voice a little, “I trust the alpha.”
Activity in the kitchen slowed, the volume lowering as some leaned in to hear their conversation.
“I trust Simon to keep me safe, Selena, that’s not what I meant.”
Her friend’s shoulders slumped in relief and the vibe in the kitchen relaxed along with her.
“What is that about?” She whispered, looking around.
Selena pulled her further away from the others in the kitchen. “Rumors are flying and it’s not healthy for the clan to have doubt in their alpha.”
She peeked behind Selena’s back and the staff hastily went back to cooking and cleaning. There were so many intricate details involved in dealing with the bears. Could she handle being Simon’s mate, knowing that would make her alpha female?
“I just needed to be back in the kitchen.”
“No.”
Cali sighed. “Selena.”
“No.”
She stared at her friend and put on her most pitiful pout. Selena growled and held up her hands. “Fine. You can watch and bark from that table in the corner.” She pointed to the table, she and Simon had sat at days ago. “Zeke, you want something to eat?”
He smiled, “always Selena.”
She smiled and walked off.
Cali went over to the table with Zeke, barking at a couple of the cooks as she passed them. They scrambled to do her bidding and she smiled. Okay, she couldn’t work, but she could still have fun.
