The smell of coffee and cooking meat greeted her as she came downstairs. She slept in Simon’s bed last night, and had awakened this morning feeling a lot better. She rotated her wrist as she padded into the kitchen. There was still pain when she moved it, but nothing she couldn’t handle. Becca was humming at the stove. Calita greeted her as she fixed herself a cup of coffee. She rolled her neck and debated what she would do today. Last night with Simon had her seriously considering his offer.

He called her his mate, and staying in his house, sleeping in his bed, she was starting to feel like it. Yesterday, hanging out with the clan was comfortable. Both men and women treated her as though she belonged already. She felt welcomed. She’d been holding herself back from the town and its residents, yesterday had changed that. Regardless of her outcome with Simon, she would stay here.

“Did you enjoy the clan gathering?” Becca broke into her thoughts.

“Funny, I was just thinking about it. I had a great time.”

Becca hummed. “That’s awesome. I’m glad nothing happened. I was worried, what with your accidents and all.”

“Yeah, thank God,” she murmured into her cup.

The sound of the door opening and stomping feet proceeded Simon entering the kitchen. He smiled when he spotted her, making a beeline for her.

He grabbed her waist and leaned over her mouth. “I loved waking up with you in my bed,” he murmured against her lips.

She snorted. “I’m sure it helps that you get morning sex, which, don’t get used to that.”

He laughed and she was fascinated with him.

“What are you doing today?” He sipped at her lips.

She leaned back. “Well, I want to go into work and see if Selena needs help.”

His gaze pinned her and she fought not to squirm. He said nothing for a long moment. Was he formulating an argument? After a moment of silence, he sighed.

“You’ll take it easy?”

She nodded quickly.

“Cali,” he growled, “you’re still injured, and the doctor said at least two weeks, so you will be careful.” He grabbed her chin and made her look into his eyes.

She wasn’t scared, points for her. She kissed him. “I promise, I won’t lift anything heavy, I’ll just hover.”

He grunted and kissed her. “Ok. There are keys in the garage. You can take either of the cars.”

She bit her lip and debated changing her mind. She wasn’t quite ready to get behind the wheel of a car.

“Would you prefer someone drive you?”

She let out a breath and felt like a coward. “Yeah, I didn’t drive much in Chicago, so the accident really shook me up.”

He walked over to the phone on the wall and pushed a button. A few minutes later a large bear of a man came into the kitchen. He greeted Becca and then smiled at Calita.

“Cali, this is Zeke, he will be your personal chauffer today,” Simon introduced him.

“Oh, you don’t have to do that, you can just drop me off.”

There was something in Simon’s expression as he smiled. “Zeke will hang out with you today, in case you need anything.”

Simon’s face was smug as though she’d given him some kind of concession. What had she missed? She nodded, deciding to ignore it for now. She gave him a quick kiss and headed to get dressed.

Simon waited until he heard the door close in the guest room and he turned to Zeke. “You’re with her all day.”

“Yes, Alpha, I’ll keep her safe,” Zeke assured him.
