Calita watched Simon leave, breathless with want. How he managed to rile both her temper and her lust confused her. She turned away from his retreating backside and got up to finish helping the women. She found them all staring at her.
“What?”
One of the older women snorted. “Had he not been interrupted, he would’ve pulled you away for a ‘talking to’.”
Calita frowned at the air quotes. “What does that mean?”
Giggles met her question. Selena touched her shoulder. “Most of the male bears have this dominance game they like to play with their mates.”
“It ain’t a game for some,” someone chimed in, and a chorus of raucous laughter erupted.
“Dominance?” Calita asked.
“They like their women submissive,” Anna supplied.
She thought on the fact that Simon had promised to let her have control of their relationship. She looked at her best friend and Selena shrugged. She knew damn well Selena was nowhere near submissive, so maybe it wasn’t something Simon needed?
“The males try to find any reason to punish their mates,” a woman said fanning her face.
“The punishments are the best part about arguing with your mate. I purposely set off his bear sometimes,” an older woman added with a wink.
High fives went around.
She wanted to ask the woman to elaborate, but the conversation had gone on far enough as far as she was concerned.
“Do you know what that was about?” Selena pulled her attention.
“What, Simon leaving?”
Selena nodded.
Cali cleared her throat. “I don’t.”
“So, Calita, has Simon talked to you about the duties of the alpha female?” Anna’s grandmother asked.
Becca choked at the same time she did.
Calita’s eyes widened. “Well, see, we ummm…”
One of the kids started crying and all eyes swiveled, their attention diverted.
“I um…I’m going to use the restroom.”
Selena snickered as she stood quickly and rushed towards the house.

Simon trotted over to where two of his enforcers stood around a saw horse. It wasn’t much in the way of a deterrent, but it wasn’t really meant to be one. Normally no one guarded it, but with the accidents happening to Calita, he wasn’t taking any chances. Gavin met him coming through from the other side of the forest. Simon frowned, wondering why his Beta had been called. He spotted Miranda and Charles, a moment later and growled. His ex-wife was nothing if not persistent.
“What are you doing here?” He didn’t address Miranda, but her companion.
“Well, I heard there was a bear gathering, I thought I would check it out.”
“There are no outsiders allowed in,” Marcus, his enforcer, said firmly. “I’ve explained it to him already, Alpha.”
“Miranda’s not one for hearing no a lot, so I’m not surprised you had to say it more than once.”
