Simon growled. “An arrow came at Calita.”
Nate rubbed the back of his neck. “Where was she?”
“At the lake, eating lunch with me.”
Nate grunted. “Y’all kept the arrow?”
“Of course.”
“I’ll get it from Gavin and add it to the list. I don’t believe in coincidences, Cousin.”
“Neither do I, Nathan. I told Miranda to leave, but she and Charles keep popping up places. Think he could have anything to do with it? Their scent was on the property the other day, but it was old.”
“Hmm,” Nate stared off in the distance. “Let me go make some calls.”
“Alpha.” One of his enforcers came up to them. “I have the perimeter secure, and I set a few men around the lake to further secure our clan gathering.”
He nodded and turned his attention back to Nate. “It can wait until after the clan gathering.”
Nate nodded and left to help the women filing out of the house. Simon spotted his mate standing and helping the women set up the food. He caught her wince and rushed to her side.
“Calita,” his growl brought her head up. “Why aren’t you sitting and taking it easy?”
“I’m not lifting anything.”
Her pout caught him off guard and stuck a pin in his anger. His chest deflated, the next argument releasing as a sigh from his lips.
“Baby, sit, please.” He guided her over to a bench near where the women were still setting up so she wouldn’t be isolated.
Her hands were shaking as she pushed her hair behind her ears. It wasn’t in its usual bun on the back of her head. The strands were ruffling with the slow wind moving through their lake. He leaned down and kissed the pout from her mouth.
“Please rest, and take it easy. There are enough people here to do what’s needed.”
“Is what we did in the shower earlier what you’d consider rest?” Her eyes sparked with temper.
The visual of what they’d done in the shower had saliva pooling in his mouth. He clenched his teeth rather than admit to her point.
“Hmm, that’s what I thought.” She leaned closer, “if you don’t object to that, then you have no leg to stand on regarding this.”
She had a point, but damn if it didn’t piss his bear off. A growl rattled his chest and he leaned over his mate.
“Alpha,” the radio at his hip sounded.
He stared into his mate’s eyes until she dropped her gaze. She was holding his eyes a little longer…good. Despite her misgivings about their mating, her body and subconscious were already going through the changes to become his.
Fucking right.
He pulled the radio off his belt. “Go ahead.”
“Got a disturbance, west gate.”
He snarled at the interruption. He leaned further into Calita’s space. “We’ll be discussing this later, mate.”
Her eyes widened and the pulse at her neck skittered. He backed away quickly before he dragged her back to the house.
