He lifted his leg to stomp her and she rolled, her heart hammering. She landed on her keys and she lifted to her knees to grab them and her mace, threading the keys through her fingers.
Her attacker growled and the wind left her in a hard whoosh as he kicked her in the ribs. She wheezed and fell flat. He rolled her over with his feet, and kneeled down over top of her.
“Unfortunately I can’t have fun with you until our alpha does.” His voice was raspy, his eyes glowing gold with his cat close to the surface.
No trace of humanity filled his determined gaze. If she didn’t fight, at best he would kidnap her, at worst he’d kill her in the garage, all to strike at their prowl. She could not let that happen.
His hands loomed large as he reached down to choke her.
No, no, no.
She dropped the mace and swatted at his hands as he tried to grip her throat. She scraped her keys down his arms, using her nails to dig into his other arm. She twisted her body, praying he’d not get the chance to pin her. The acrid taste of panic filled her mouth, she feared what would happen if he did. He leaned his weight on her and smirked before licking up the side of her face.
She growled, frustrated anger burning through her. She brought her keys up and stabbed them into his cheek. He snarled and full on punched her in the face. Stunned, her ears ringing, she dropped the keys, blinking as black dots drifted across her vision. Her attacker stiffened and the faint sounds of tires squealing drifted to her.
He lifted his nose and inhaled. “They’re here, I have her, let’s go,” he barked at the others.
She renewed her fight to get from under him, frantically grabbing for the mace she’d dropped. She nearly cried when she gripped the canister. She was tired, hurt, but if she could keep up just a little longer, their enforcers would be there. Her attacker grabbed her hair with one hand and dug his claws into her shoulders with the other, dragging her up to stand. She screamed and brought up her hand, aiming the mace spray towards his face, especially the spot where she’d keyed him.
She choked as some of the spray blew back into her face, the hot lash of pain making her breathless. He screamed and released her, she dropped to the ground, her eyes streaming. Determination had her struggling to stand, but she did, and as soon as she got her feet under her, she took off running towards the sound of the approaching car. An SUV came barreling around the corner of the garage, and she sobbed in relief.
“You got lucky bitch, but next time you won’t.” He shouted behind her.
He dragged one of his fellow attackers off the ground and the one battling Simon grabbed another, supporting the male as they escaped. Simon dropped to the ground as he tried to chase them. He was bleeding from the back of his head, his half-shifted claws were bloody and his breathing jerky. She changed directions and rushed to him, her arm hanging limply at her side in pain, but before she could get to him, security from their prowl grabbed him up. They got in her face to check on her and she pushed them off with her good arm.
“No one touches me.”
She would get Charlotte to get the scent. Their grandfather had always said Charlotte was the best tracker he’d ever seen.
“Fela,” an enforcer pleaded, “let us help you.”
She walked back to her briefcase and picked it up, using her good hand to shuffle in the contents. Limping to her SUV, she growled at anyone coming near here. No one would touch her until Charlotte got that scent.
One of the enforcers from Carlos’ old prowl walked up to her with his hands raised. “At least let me drive, Fela. Simon is too hurt to drive.” She nodded and handed him her key.
She looked around and saw as they loaded Simon into the large SUV they’d driven. The enforcers, except the one driving her, piled in the other truck. Before he pulled off, the driver murmured into a cell phone and passed it back to her. She knew who it was, knew they would be frantic.
“I’m okay,” was the first thing she said. She hissed as the enforcer took a corner fast. “I’ll be home shortly. I’m going to call Charlotte and have her meet me at the apartment.”
“Whatever you need, baby.” Derrick soothed.
Their worry coated their link, wrapping her in their concern. She sent as much reassurance as she was able through her pain.
“Save your energy sweetheart, don’t use it to placate your mates. We’ll have a healer waiting on you as well.” Carlos’ voice was barely over a rumble. His anger and worry was clear to discern. “Can you tell me what happened?”
“We were ambushed. Simon and I took the stairs up to the parking garage and as we came out of the stairwell they rushed us. There were four of them.” Her breath hitched as she realized how close she’d been to getting kidnapped. She’d never complain about Simon ever again. His being there had surely saved her life.
“The rest can wait, sweetheart.”
She nodded and ended the call. She called her cousin and Charlotte picked it up quickly.
“Char, are you at work?” Her voice broke.
“What happened?” Charlotte must’ve sensed the urgency.
“Someone attacked me and I want you to find them. Granddad said you were the best.”
“Are you home, are you okay? Never mind, don’t answer. I’ll meet you there in ten.” Charlotte ended the call, needing nothing but her cousin’s request to come.
