Chapter 21

Savannah drummed her fingers along the steering wheel and bit her lip. She had one eye on the red light, and one ear on the conversation taking place in her earpiece. She hated early morning conference calls, but it was the only time that fit into her client’s schedule. She turned her head and smiled at Ella and Jamie in the backseat quietly going over their candy haul from last night. She was on her way to drop them off to school. The little girl had begged her dad to let her spend the night with them. It was cute, the way her and Jamie had bonded.

She didn’t blame Ella. She hadn’t wanted the fun from last night to end either. Last night with Carlos was nice. When he wasn’t in alpha mode he was easy to talk with. She learned a lot about him, and had to admit, she was attracted to him.

They talked the whole lap they’d taken around the neighborhood and even when they’d come back to the impromptu party at her house with his family. He’d left her with a kiss on the lips that fueled her fantasies as she slept. He was planning a slow seduction, she was sure of it, and damn it, it was working.

She thought back on the other night she’d stayed over to his house. He’d teased her about it last night. She smiled. She couldn’t believe he’d been true to his word and not tried anything with her. He’d given her a kiss and settled into a spoon position, sleep within a few minutes. He was right, she could’ve tried to leave the bed, but she’d wanted to be there. She may as well admit it.

She sighed, she didn’t know why she was fighting so hard. Maybe she could talk to the current seer and find out if something had changed. Perhaps her fate didn’t have to be what Antoinette had said. She was smart enough to figure out a way to cement her place as Fela.

The light turned green and she pulled out into the intersection. She looked up in the rearview at the kids and smiled. It turned into a frown as she noticed the same black car that had been behind her the past three stoplights. Carlos’ words about their safety crossed her mind and she bit her lip.

Could be a coincidence, Tampa wasn’t that big.

Besides, there were only so many routes to their school. She slowed down to see if the car would pass. It didn’t and she was only slightly relieved when it pulled off as she pulled into the school parking lot and got in the carline. She blew kisses at the kids and merged back into traffic headed towards her office. She finished her conference call and took the earpiece out.

She didn’t have any pressing work now that the meeting was done, so she wasn’t in a rush. She turned into the gas station and her heart started thumping when the black car following her earlier, pulled into the gas station but didn’t get out of the car. Hands shaking, she replaced the pump and canceled her transaction. She slid into her car and drove off.

She kept her eyes on her rearview mirror and noticed the car was directly behind her. Was it the people responsible for the attacks on the other women? Were they waiting to corner her someplace less crowded?

She looked up and the car was still behind her. Her hands were shaking on the steering wheel. She fumbled through her purse for her phone praying she didn’t run herself off the road. She called Carlos.

“Yeah, babe.”

She took a deep breath working to keep the panic from her voice. “There’s someone following me.”

“Are you sure?” His voice sharpened.

“Yes, I’m sure.” She peered in the mirror and he was still there.

“Come home to me then. I don’t want you to lead him to your house.”

Oh God. Her breath left her mouth on a shudder. What if he already knew where she lived?

“Come home, baby, we’ll handle it.”

The strength of his voice reassured her. She sped up, going through a yellow light, her breath hitching when the car behind her ran the red light.

“Oh God,” she whispered.

She flew to the prowl house praying the whole way there. She had to stop at the guard gate before being allowed into the parking garage. The guard came out and waved her in. She was so relieved. She checked her mirror, her eyes widening when the car following her was waved in as well.

That meant…he worked for Carlos.

How dare he?

She parked her car and stomped over to the elevator. She fumed all the way up to his office. She bypassed his assistant, ignoring her as she tried to stop Savi’s entrance.

“How dare you!” She shouted.

She sucked in a breath as she saw his enforcers gathered around the office, some faces she recognized since they were her cousins. She didn’t care. She passed them, her body trembling with adrenaline.

“How dare you?” she said again, between gritted teeth.

Carlos stood and came from around his side of his desk and met her in the front. “Savannah.”

“Uh-oh,” someone whispered.
