Chapter 20

Derrick prowled around his target, his gaze steady on her as she worked in her garden. As if sensing him, she looked up and smiled. He growled and walked back to the basket of clothes he’d spotted on his way over. Fully dressed, he stepped out from the side of her house.

Joelle waved and bent back over her vegetables. “Can you bring my some water while you’re over there?”

He unwound the garden hose and lugged it to her, after turning on the water. She gave him a grateful nod and sprayed the dry dirt on a seemingly empty row. He crossed his arms over his chest and watched in silence for a few moments.

“I know what you’re looking for, but I can’t give you an exact answer for what Savannah was told.”

Derrick sighed. “I want you to go see her. It’s time.”

The seer nodded. “I think you’re right about that.”

“What was Antoinette’s purpose?”

The spray of water stopped and Joelle looked up at him in surprise. “No one has ever asked me that.”

“Well?”

She restarted the spray. “She wanted control of this prowl. Being Seer gave her that. I saw Savi as alpha female and a stronger prowl under her. If Toni’s brother were no longer Felix, her power over the prowl was gone.”

It was a good of motive as any. Anger brought his power flooding his body. “Do you have any idea where she could’ve gone?”

“I was so young,” she said as way of apology.

He nodded. It didn’t hurt to try. He would find Antoinette on his own. It was time she was found and made to answer for what she’d done.

“I’ll leave you to it then.”

Joelle waved him away and went back to her work.

Derrick drove back into town, their conversation playing in his head. He would have to talk to the old Felix and find out if his sister had any contacts in the area. By the time he got back to the apartment building, he spotted his mate and the kids in the garage, loading into Savannah’s car.

He knocked on the driver’s window and waved at the kids as Savi lowered the glass.

“Can I help you?” She gave him an impish smile.

“Where are you guys going?”

“Costumes!” Marcella answered from the backseat.

“Wants some help?” He leaned into the window, rubbing his cheek against Savannah’s.

She sighed and rubbed the top of his head. “Are you sure?”

He tilted her chin up. “Am I sure I want to spend time with my mate and children?”

“Derrick,” her soft entreaty brushed his lips. “We talked about this.”

He dropped a small kiss to her lips. “I don’t remember any conversation like that.”

“Come with us, Beta.” Jamie said.

Derrick raised his eyebrows and kissed her again. “Our kids want me go.”

Her gaze studied him for a quiet moment, her eyes broadcasting her inner struggle. She blew out an impatient breath. “Fine.”

He smiled and crossed to the passenger seat of the car. He groaned as he squeezed into the seat, pushing back as far as he could without crushing Mari behind him. She slid an amused glance over him before taking off. He pulled out his phone.
