“He’s an alpha.”
Her mother was silent. Savannah looked to her cousins, both of whom shrugged.
“Well, what do I do? Do I call grandfather?” She prodded.
Karen sighed. “I would suggest you stay out of the affairs of men, darling.”
Naomi held her hand over her mouth to prevent her laughter, while Charlotte pretended to gag.
She rolled her eyes at their antics. “Mom, seriously, it’s the twenty first century.”
“Honey, you stopped going to meetings and gatherings, it’s not your place to worry about the inner workings of the prowl. Leave it to your grandfather, he probably already knows.”
Charlotte gave her an ‘I told you so’ look and Savannah flipped her the bird. “You think?”
“Well, I don’t know because I stay out of their business.”
Naomi gave up trying to contain her giggles. The conversation was going nowhere.
“I love you, goodbye, mom.”
“I love you too, pumpkin.” Her mother laughed as she hung up.
She chewed on the nail of her thumb, debating her next call. “Do you guys think I should warn grandfather?”
“Aunt Karen told you to stay in a woman’s place.” Charlotte said deadpan.
Naomi busted out in another fit of giggles.
“You two are ridiculous.” She said as she dialed their grandfather’s number.
It took three calls before he answered the phone. “Why are you blowing up my phone, child?”
“We gave you that phone so you would be available, grandfather. I was scared.”
“For what reason? You know where I am if I’m not answering.” His voice was distracted, telling her that Jeremiah was still tending to his farm, even as he spoke with her.
“The phone is so we can reach you in the field.” She grumbled.
“How am I to answer the phone when I’m doing field work?”
“Grandfather!” She growled and decided to skip the speech on why a seventy-year-old man should not be doing field work, no matter how strong his panther was. “There’s an alpha in town.”
He hummed. “I’m aware.”
She let out the breath she was holding and refused to look at Charlotte. Her cousin’s smug look was still visible from the corner of her eye.
“What does this mean for you, for the prowl?”
“It means, we’ll finally have someone strong enough to protect our prowl, and the territory we’ve held by sheer determination.”
“What will happen to you?”
“If the land welcomes him, then I will step down.”
“No fighting?” Naomi spoke up.
“I’m not afraid to fight,” he scoffed. “But I’ve been Felix long enough to recognize what we need.”
