“I’m grateful, dude, but maybe do me one more favour and give us five minutes of privacy,” Jack suggests as he adjusts me and I curl into his side on the bed.
I can now see that Shannon’s leaning against the wall opposite the bed, standing in the same pose as he was when I finished talking to the police earlier.
“Five minutes,” he says, pushing off the wall.
“Will you go back and tell the others he’s okay? Tell them they can go if they want, I’ll get an Uber,” I ask as he moves towards the door.
“I’ll call one of my boys, they’ll drop us both home,” he replies before heading out the door.
The quiet beep of the heart rate monitor is the only sound in the room for a few seconds. Jack’s hand comes to my face and his thumb brushes against the tears still resting on my cheeks.
“What a fucking night,” he looks down at me and says. I feel his chest move beneath me as he lets out a long deep sigh. “You doing okay, Blue?”
“I am now,” I tell him honestly. “That was horrible though. You were out for so long . . .”
“I’m fine.” He slides a finger under my chin and tilts my head so I’m looking up at him. “I’ve had x-rays and an MRI, I’m fine. He just caught me sweet and knocked me the fuck out. They’re keeping me in for observation, but I’ll be home tomorrow . . . today, or I. Whenever, but you’re gonna pick me up. You’re gonna come to mine, and we’re gonna talk and get shit sorted.”
My stomach churns at the prospect of ‘talking’ and telling Jack everything I have to tell him.
“You need to rest. Talking can wait.”
“I’m fine . . .” he starts to argue. The door to his room opens, and my cheeks burn at being caught by the nurse lying curled up on his bed.
“Hate to break up the party, guys . . .”
“It’s fine,” I reply quickly as I guiltily slide off the bed. “You got your phone?” I ask Jack who’s gripping my hand, preventing me from stepping away.
“Yeah. Not sure what charge I have though.”
“We’ll find you a charger,” the nurse says as she types on her iPad.
“Get some sleep now, then call me later and let me know what’s happening.”
I give his hand a squeeze before attempting to pull away. His grip tightens, preventing my movement.
“You forgetting something, Blue?” he asks with one eye closed.
“No. Why’s your eye closed? Your head hurting?” I look between him and the nurse.
Jack holds up his middle finger and thumb, with the tiniest space between them.
“You could come kiss it better,” he whispers with a wink.
A wink that nearly knocks me off my feet and has me hoping my Womanizer is fully charged because, despite tonight’s trauma, I’m really fucking horny.
I lean in, kiss his temple, and pull away.
“That’s it?” Jack calls after me.
I turn as I reach the door and look back at him. “Our first second time around kiss isn’t going to be while you’re lying in a hospital bed.”
“Will it be while I’m lying in my bed . . . or yours?”
“Go to sleep, Jack,” I call out as I leave.
