“And Sandro? He being a dick?”
“With a capitalD.” I sigh. “Though he’s backed off now that Don Lucchese’s taken a liking to me.” Yeah, it was a good day. I might yet turn this horrible situation into one I can navigate.
“Of course he liked you.” In the background, he shuffles about, and then out of breath, he resumes our conversation. “And is everything else okay? Is my father behaving?”
I cough. Do. Not. Think. About. Bastian.Misbehaving. I quickly recover. “Define behaving.”
“You, living unprotected beneath his roof—”
“Didn’t Zoey tell you?” I interrupt. “I’m staying in the casita.”
“The casita?” His reaction’s similar to Zoey’s. Why is this news surprising?
“Stay away from him, okay?”
“That’s the plan.” And, if tonight’s any indication, a plan I’ll have little trouble implementing.
“Shit,” he curses. “They’re coming…”
“Who?” An uneasiness sweeps over me.
“Sergeant Dickwad and his men … Quick, before I need to hang up. Get my passport from the bedside table and stuff a bag with my shit. As soon as I escape, I’ll come for you.”
“Wait … no…”
“We’ll elope.”
“Please. Don’t go against your father’s wishes. Stay in rehab. I’ll be okay.”
“You want to marry my asshole twin?”
“No,” I blurt.
“Look. I got you into this mess…”
“Don’t worry about me. Focus on getting clean.”
He whispers. “Always an angel, aren’t you?”
No. Not always. But I don’t … can’t … explain it to him.
“Back the fuck up.” I freeze at Renzo’s shout. “Or I’ll—”
The call disconnects.
My hand shakes.
It’s wrong. It’s disloyal. It’s for his own good. But I pray Sergeant Dickwad can keep Renzo in rehab. If he intends to save me, he’ll need to save himself first.
CHAPTER19
BASTIAN
“The balls on you, Bastian,” Don Lucchese admonishes. “A golf course?”
We’re at the first hole, half-drunk from last night’s festivities and from our new money-making opportunities. I’m feeling like a fucking king, with Don Lucchese about to hand over the kingdom. Only Sandro and Alessia remain disengaged from the celebration.
I’ve paired them up. Governor Amato is partnered with Don Lucchese. And Dante with me.
