“I’ve got it. It’s just a stew.”

“Ok.”

“You could call Jamie though—find out if he wants to come over.”

Austin frowned. “He said he had other plans tonight.”

I swallowed a lump in my throat—momentarily imagining the handsome omega sitting across from an alpha that was neither Austin nor me, playing with his brown hair and batting his laughing brown eyes while flirting. “Oh, ok…”

Austin sighed and leaned against me. “I know…”

I wrapped my arms around him, sharing that moment of terror.

Would this be the day the other most important person in our lives found his mate?

Austin, Jamie, and I—that was the way it had been since we were children. The three of us were a team back in the days when girls and boys had different varieties of cooties, and the realities of alpha and omega were still years away.

Back then, everybody had thought Jamie would be the alpha, and Austin the omega. Jamie was a prankster, determined, and headstrong. If he wanted something, it was going to happen. We’d gotten in trouble following Jamie’s lead more times than I could count, but it had always been worth it.

Austin, on the other hand, wore his heart on his sleeve. He was sensitive, kind, and caring. His was a nurturing soul.

I’d presented first, halfway through high school. Nobody had been surprised about me being an alpha.

Then, a couple of months later, Jamie had gone into his first heat.

It wouldn’t have been so bad, except his heat scent triggered a rut in Austin.

The dynamics had been set. Two alphas, one omega.

Many people had expected us to drift apart. Jamie would surely settle down and shift towards the other omegas—where they could discuss babies and families. And Austin and I would find ourselves in stupid competitions with other alphas to find out who was the most alpha of the group.

Except that didn’t happen. We were as tight as ever. Sure, we sometimes did drift to spend some time with others of the same dynamic, but we’d always been a trio, alpha and omega didn’t matter.

We were still Austin, Jamie, and I. It was how it was supposed to be.

At least until we took mates.

Which brought up another problem: Austin and I were both madly in love with Jamie.

Chapter 3 - Austin

“Stop staring out the window,” Declan huffed, tugging me to the couch and pulling me onto his lap. “It’s futile at best and creepy at worst.”

“I just…” I started.

He kissed my neck. “I know. But the walls are paper thin. We’ll hear if somebody is over there.”

I sighed and slumped in his embrace. Declan was the only other person who knew my fears—because his were the same.

Each day we woke up and wondered if that would be the day Jamie found his mate—if that would be the day that our omega declared his love for somebody else and was forever out of reach.

It would also be the day that whatever Declan and I had… would also probably end. I hated the thought of that just as much.

He and I had a pact. We both wanted Jamie, but we didn’t want to break up the trio, so neither of us pursued him. However, being with another omega wasn’t right either—not when Jamie was still unmated. And a man has needs.

It had been during one of Jamie’s heats—when we could hear him pleasuring himself through the wall and his heat scent bledinto our apartment—that Declan had been unable to restrain himself. The other alpha had barged into my room—black hair disheveled and gray eyes wild—saw that I was as hard as he was, and promptly sucked me down like I was a God-damned milkshake. Then, after my balls had thoroughly drained down his throat, he’d flipped me over and given me the best fuck of my life—coming in and knotting me repeatedly.

It had been that way ever since. We couldn’t fuck Jamie, so we fucked each other. We kissed and cuddled in private—taking on the role of companion until the day when one of us found a mate and the dream ended.
