He smiled, squeezed my knee, and stood. “May you find your mate this night.”

I recognized the phrase that the first man had used and realized it must be a common sentiment from their world. “You too.”

“Thank you,” he said, then wandered off.

I watched as he approached a small group and started talking. Almost immediately, he seemed to focus on one man, who was equally entranced.

Another moan from one side, and when I glanced over I saw the human had the pink alien’s cock in his mouth.

“Shit…” I mumbled. I ran a hand through my hair. Sure I’d seen my fair share of groping at bars and sucked a guy off in an alley a time or two. But this? There were still men in uniform at the doors and the room was brightly lit.

I met the eyes of a few more humans who seemed mildly uncomfortable as more men paired up and it was clear that this was the expected outcome.

I returned my attention to the green man, but the human he’d been eyeing was leading him away from the group, arm slung around his waist and fingers lightly brushing the rise of his ass.

Another scan of the room. It seemed that at least a third of the men had already paired up, and the number could have been approaching half. It was mildly terrifying. We were only about half an hour into the party, and all those men had found the man they were going to spend the rest of their lives with.

Was my alien mate in the room? What would happen if I didn’t find a partner? Nobody had asked. Would I have to hang around the base until another party? Would I be sent back?

Thoughts of all of it being for nothing were swirling through my head when I heard a chipper, “Hello!”

I glanced up and into the dark blue eyes of the most beautiful man I’d ever seen.

Chapter 9

“H-hi,” I replied, suddenly tongue-tied.

He smiled, light purple skin crinkling around his eyes. “May I sit?”

I nodded. “P-please.”

He perched himself on the couch, then turned to me. “What are you called?”

“Staff Sergeant Carson,” I replied automatically.

He laughed. “Is that not your… rank?”

“Uh… uh…” I stammered. “Avery.”

“Avery,” he echoed, and the sound of my name coming from his lips sent shivers up my spine

I swallowed. “What’s your name?”

He scooted a couple of inches closer. “I am Lumi.”

“Looming?” I asked, not sure I’d heard him correctly.

He laughed. “Lumi.”

I caught the difference that time. The ‘oo’ sound was shorter and there wasn’t the ‘ng’ at the end. “Lumi?”

He rewarded me with a brilliant smile. “That is correct.”

My fingers twitched with the need to touch him. Was his skin as soft as it looked?

I swallowed. “Y-your English is good. How long did it take to learn?”

He laughed. “I do not speak English.”
